Yeah they are difficult to find from vendors, most of those people sell Japanese import motors, and afaik they didn't make the B20Z in Japan...however...
I believe they made a B20B JDM model that had the higher compression & hp like the B20Z. Trouble is finding a trustworthy vendor who won't just tell you it's the good one then sell you the weaker one, and with the JDM model there's no real way to tell from the outside as the stamp is the same.
That's pretty steep, unless it comes with a manual transmission already on it. For a Z in good shape I'd be looking to pick it up for $800 tops for the longblock. I've seen them for less though. If you can't find a decent deal you might consider getting the B18B for cheap then replacing the pistons with the Z models and a new set of rings...
b18b would be easier to find, not sacrafice much in lieu of the b20z, and most likely cheaper.
b18b + gsr transmission should cost around $1200-1400 in good, running condition.
really all depends on what you have to spend, or what you're willing to spend.
either way with the b20x, you're going to have to invest in a transmission from another b series engine

the 94 civics come with D series motors. the D series motors are single overhead cam motors and arent quite as durable as the B series motors. for instance the (1.6 liter) D16 (y7 or y8 (non vtec or vtec)) have around +/-100 horse. while the B16a1 (92-95 Civic Si motor) pushes about 165 - 170 horse out of hte box. I have a 94 civic DX coupe (if you are getting a hatch... everyting is still the same under the hood) and i almost bought a B16a1, all you need to buy is new axles, new motor mounts, and shift linkage. once hte motor is pulled out of your car, everything is EXTREMELY easy to replace. just a couple bolts for the shift linkage, and the new motor mounts literally just swap right out. the reason for the new axles, is because D series and B series motors use different tranny's, as well as different motor mounts/tranny mount which would explain your getting new mounts.
if you go to www.osakajdmmotors.com you can purchase this complete set up (motor, tranny, harnesses, alternator, powersteering, A/C, etc. for about $2,000 with shipping and all your new parts. go to www.avidracing.com, or www.hasport.com (avid is cheaper) to find motor mounts. they will be a few hundred dollars.
I hope this helps man.
And I hope I didnt run on about the motors, because you said you were new to the honda motors. Thats about what everyone does to their civic, is a B Series Swap.
You can get a B18 (1.8 liter) but it will be a little more expensive, same sized block and tranny though lol. pretty much same swap.
the b series motors have SOOOOOOO many bolt on upgrades. headers, cams, intakes, cheap turbo kits, entire top ends, lifters, valves, valve/spring kits, pistons, soooo much more. go to online shops and check some of it out

You guys are great. I go onto a lot of forums for different cars. You have def been the most helpful and the more I read the more I want to get a civic. Sounds crazy comming from my mouth a big time Mustang fan. But these cars earned my respect, reliable, goo don gas and from what I read a lot of different things you can do to have alot of fun with them. Too bad there are so many that are "riced" out and gave the scene a bad rep. I just need to sell my current car and will have about $2500-2800 to get a civic and do some work to it once I move to SC next month.
