LS B18B or GSR B18C for Boost?
I plan on buying a teggy but I'm trying to determine which...I'm leaning towards the more pricey GSR B18C but the LS is also a possibility. If I'm planning to install a full turbo kit plus semi-extensive internal work on the block to reach an ultimate goal of say ~400 HP...Should I go with the cheaper LS and B18B or GSR B18C?...and if the B18B, should I swap a VTEC head on it? and if LS, a GSR tranny? Thnx for any help- HUFF

I would say get the LS and use the money you save to build the motor and turbo.I would keep the LS head and the LS tranny.

i would have to disagree. i personally have the gsr and its worked out great. i get well over 400whp, but my motor is fully built. i would go wit the gsr, its more power to start with and the vtech is just better than the ls, and the ls transmission has way to long of a gear set

Ls would be great, vtec is just gonna be another thing to tune around. Do not get me wrong tho if you have the money it really does not matter which platform you decide ( what are the uses?) because you plan on 400hp the motors will all be built. Like trapper said you can use the money you saved to build the ls thats a plus.

1.first of don't listen to anybody who can't spell VTEC
2.400whp is plenty easy on a b18b. hte b18c1 isn't anymore capable than the ls. sure it has a "SLIGHTLY" better flowing head but the ls makes some nice midrange power when boosted and you don't have to tune around vtec to have a steady powerband. Believe it or not vtec is bad for boost, you don't want more valve overlap when boosting.
3.and you do not know what you are talking about at all. how much power it has to start off with doesn't really matter when boosting. it's more of the dynamics of the motor than anything. do you realize that by the time you drop the CR for your "fully built" motor, it doesn't have the initial power you had beforehand. It'll have less since your new CR for your built motor would prolly be around 8.5:1-9:1 and the timing retardation. that's a big step down from 10:1 for a motor that makes it's power from aggressive cams and advanced timing. in essence you lost alteast 15 whp from what it was stock to build it for boosting if you do it correctly.
4. ls transmission is just fine for boost. infact the first 2 gears are identical on both transmissions. the slightly longer gears actually aren't bad for boost at all. why do you think some people switch to slightly longer gears when boosting.
if you're goal is 400whp stick with the ls. and invest in a gt35r, a nice motor build, and TUNING TUNING TUNING. you can get a used ls pretty cheap. prolly around 500-800 bucks. and the thousands of dollars you just saved can be spent building the motherfucker.

Thanks I guess for the extremely indignant but partially helpful post. Can you run say 15 psi boost on a 10:1 CR or do you HAVE to lower it?

first of psi means nothing. you could run 15 psi off of a gt28 on a b18c1 with that cr with proper tuning and make like around 290-300whp. but if you tried 15 psi with lets say a gt35r, you'd be looking for a new motor. my point is 15 psi from one turbo isn't the same from another. bigger turbos move more air and spool slower. but make more power per lb of boost with the right tuning. if you're shooting for 400whp and want your shit to last. drop that CR to atleast 9:1. you could run crazy psi on 10:1 with the right internals and a tune but it won't run on pump gas.
my point is that if you're gonna fully build both motors to withand 400whp reliably then the gsr is a complete waste of money. you're gonna spend atleast 1500 dollars more for the gsr to only rip everything out of it. that's just pointless. if you're gonna build your motor for n/a power then yes go with the gsr. but if you're gonna build for 400whp boosted b-series then go with the b18b. that 1500 dollars can be spent on a nice set of internals and install etc. just cause the gsr starts off with 20 more whp doesn't mean anything at all

When you build the motor the starting power means nothing.Yea the VTEC head may flow better but once you start building the motor and boosting it VTEC is not needed.I have seen lots of people swap out the gsr tranny for the longer geared ls.

exactly. it's obvious that his "FULLY BUILT" gsr was built by somebody else or he would understand that. sorry i'm just annoyed that somebody who "knows" so much can't even spell VTEC correctly. i would be nicer if he could just get this 4 letter acronym correct.

Yea he probably just had a shop do his "fully built" motor and he thinks vtec is the best thing ever no matter what.
