BRAKE LIGHT... what the hell

Okay, I went to start the car the other day, and my brake light stayed on. I checked my ebrake, and it was completely down and the light was on, so I figured what the hell... let's drive it anyway. I drove it to discover that when I touched the brake pedal, it went off. When I stepped on the gas, it came back on. I came to a stop sign and pumped the brakes and it stayed off for about 5 minutes and came back on. Sooo... I thought something was sticking and I put the brakes on a bit harder at the next stop sign, and went to take off and it hasn't come back on since (knock on wood)....

Anyone have any ideas on what the hell was wrong?? Did it send a code to my computer by any chance??? I don't remember what the brake light indicates except the brake being on. Anyone??

The brake light comes on if it senses that your brake fluid is low, and it's pretty finicky. Check your fluid and if it's low, top it off.

double check the fluid. I dont think a bad M/c would cause the light to come on since mine went bad and the light never came on. Does your car have abs? If it does the computer might have the code. On my G2 there is a computer in the trunk for the abs system with a light that tells you any codes that may pop up. check the little swith on the ebrake. also, you might want to check the wires that connect to the fluid resivoir cap. more than likly its the fluid.

it's a 2000 LS coupe, I am pretty sure it's ABS...

would this vehicle have a seperate ABS computer somewhere or would it read off the main computer???

where are both computers located??? one is under the passenger floorboard right?

You need to change the brake resevoir cap. The little floater thingy on the cap rod is probably no good. Get it changed out, it should cost you like $28.00 at the dealership.

ok you may be correct about the cap...

I have a couple questions though, what kind of brake fluid does a 00 integra need??? I couldnt find it anywhere on the cap.

Also, when I top off the fluid, as it is not at the "max" line, do I have to bleed the brakes and all that shit??? I hope not... that is a major pain in the ass.

Also, the next thing I was wondering about CAP related, was the cap is very loose, as it turns about 1/8 - 1/4 inch before getting taught. It's like it's not on all the way, but I do not have any leaking from it or anything. So it must be sealed to the point where it won't leak under pressure. Any ideas???

Well use any DOT 3 fluid for your Integra. Also, if it's not tightening all the way, that may cause a problem. Just get a new cap.

do I need to bleed the brakes to replace the cap??? I know nothing about brake systems, besides changing pads.

You are suppose to use DOT 3 in your car, but i hear you can use DOT 4 also.
As far as bleeding the system, you only have to do this if the fluid level got really low. It may be a good isea to do it anyways if it has been a long time since you have done it. Clean fluyid works better.
The light could be your cap. It could also be a bulb. Get a freind to help you look at it. You can pull up the ebrake and have him/her look at the lights to make sure they come on correctly.

Doesn't the interior brake light come on to indicate a malfunction in the outside brake bulbs? That maybe my Mom's Camry that does that, but I thought the Honda's did it too.
