Drove 800 miles and back last week. On the way up, this problem started to occur. Serious stumbling on acceleration, and gas mileage went from 27-30 mpg, to less than 20. I knew the fuel filter needed to be replaced, but have put it off. So, had to drive ~400 miles back home with car running this way, figured it was the fuel filter. Replaced the fuel filter, system is still stumbling, gas mileage is still real shitty. What gives?? I replaced my spark plugs, wires, rotor, and cap within the last month, replaced valve cover, only to find that one of the bolts that holds on the valve cover is striped, so there is no nut on there atm, but I believe that it is still sealing. Didnt mess with timing, and I put the valve cover PCV hose back on...
Check your plug wires? Cylinder misfires will cause bad mileage. Make sure the boots arent cracked, make sure theyre seated. It was fine before the tune up, maybe thats where the problem lies.
Yeah, I thought the same thing also.. Funny thing is that it was all good after the tune up... Drove down to my dad's place, car sat for 3-4 days while some body work got done. Got the car back, loped just a slight bit at idle, figured it was just the sensors adjusting to the different climate, since my dad's place is much more humid than mine. After I left, went thru 2 tanks of gas before this problem started... I got nothing....
Im gonna take it down to a place with a diagnostics machine tomorrow and see if they can give me any useful information....
I'm not sure if a diagnostics tool would do anything if you don't have a check engine light.
Double-check the plug wires... take them off at the distributor and make sure nothing is bent. Try running a bottle of Regane fuel injector cleaner; it's like $7, can't hurt really.

Yup, turns out that one of the bootys was not seated all the way on.. Boy do I look dumb.. *grin Thought I had checked them, but with the spark plugs being so recessed, I did not check well enough... Booty was much hotter than the other 3, along with some heat dmg to the booty itself.. i.e. hardened rubber, discoloration( has a brownish color/dust to it), and was difficult to remove compared to the other 3. Seated all of them back on, problem was completely solved... /shrug
Even though I look dumb for this, I still learned alot, and got a chance to tear into my car, and learn more about how it works, and the efforts needed to do some real work on it.. Thx for the help guys..
Sweet deal, cost you nothing! Love it when that happens.
