I need some help, I changed my battery yesterday because the other one died, and I just noticed the Check Engine light came on. Is that normal when the battery gets changed or can someone help me out. Is there a way to tell? I called the dealership, and the guy was like I can reset it for $80, and check to see the problem for $80, and that's too much. So I was wondering if there was another way. Thanks
u can just reset it by takeing off the neg. battery terminal for 10 min. (make sure u got the codes for radio etc.). then hook it back on and start ur car with everything turned off (radio, lights etc). DO NOT step on the gas. just let it run for 10 min and turn it off. then turn it on and ur ecu is reset. to check the CEL u have to jump the 2 pin grey connector under the passenger side knee panel and just count the blinks for the code.
or you can reset the CEL like it is supposed to be reset by looking under your dash where the steerring wheel goes undernieth the panel. you will see a little blue square button. turn the key to the ignition on position and press the button in until it turns the cel light off. turn the key to the off position and then start the engine. Then buy a helms manual and learn a little about your car.

actually that clears the check engine light . it is the same light.
and to top it off, if you are kicking a code and reset the ecu but dont fix the problem, the code will come right back again

They are two different lights... As far as resetting your ECU you don't need to take it off for ten minutes to get rid of the CEL, just take it off leave it off for like 5 secs and put it back on and then start your car and run it till the fan kicks in, don't step on the gas. I have reset my ECU a number of times because of my test pipe and that's all I do and it works everytime to get rid of the CEL. But do make sure you check to see what code your throwing before you reset it.

Actually the same thing happened to me regarding the battery. I was changing out my radio and my battery died. I jumped it and about an hour later my check engine light came on. The acura dealership near me said that if the battery gets too low the check engine light will come on.

I give praise for the search. Just merely pointing out the fact so when he and others look they know to check dates of threads before bumping them back from the abyss.
eyyy... i know its a OLD ass thread but ppl are talkin about jumping codes so i was wondering if anybody knew how to do it on a 3rd gen jetta? i checked under the passanger side and theres no lil blue thing like on c-speedracing .com and somebody told me to take out the ashtray and i didnt find anything there either, maybe i didnt look right or maybe its somewhere else but i want to figure it out, any suggestions?

Diff car manufacturer, different method. Its not a universal thing. You may want to check with the VW crowd.
