Clutch Problems... Help!

Today at a stoplight when I put my car in gear and let out the clutch the car just started vibrating badly up front and the revs would go higher than normal before engagement. First gear vibrates the whole front end when I try to get going. If I really baby it there is no vibration and the car will get going. When I do get the car up to speed it is fine. Shifting is very awkward but I managed to get the car home. My car has around 110k miles on it and i think it's a stock clutch. So I guess it's time for a new one. What parts do I need to get the car back into good shape?

Sounds like a bearing has gone bad.

If you are stock and will keep it stock, then a basic Exedy clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and pilot bearing would be minimum. Then based on the condition of your flywheel, you may have to get a new one or have yours turned.

Hey thanks for the reply, I got this kit from summit part no: RAM-88830. It includes the clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing but it does not come with the pilot bearing. How important is the pilot bearing to replace?

The pilot bearing is a small bushing that is mounted in the crank. This holds in place and keeps the transmission centered to the engine. If the kit comes with an alignment tool, one end of the alignment tool goes into the pilot bearing and the other into the clutch.

Pilot bearings are inexpensive and are important.

Here's the thing, if you pull your tranny to replace all the other parts, why not replace a $10 bearing. If you do not do it at the same time, you may be pulling your tranny out again in a few months just to replace it. Saves time and money in the long run.

Most kits come with the bearing. I see the Ram does not. Nothing wrong with Summitracing, have given them lots of my money

If you are staying stock, here is a good kit from a good seller -> Clutchcityonline (ebay).

Okay I ordered a pilot bearing through autopartswarehouse. I'll post back when I get the parts and let everyone know how the replacement goes.

No, its not. I think some might spill out if you take the axels out but not all of it. The clutch is dry if you didnt know already.

It could be just a hotspot on the flywheel, in which case, the problem will fix itself. It could also be a piece of clutch pad breakng up and getting stuck between the clutch and flywheel. The same problem happened to me and when I replaced my clutch a few months later, there was a chunk of clutch pad missing from my otherwise healthy clutch. But, I also had thrust bearing problems. Describe in detail your shifting problems. Can you shift easily when the car is off? When you shift, does each gear only shift at a certain mph? If so, then you probably have the same problem I had, a bad thrust bearing.

Hey thanks for the reply but I am in the process of replacing the clutch already. I need to know if I can leave the tranny oil in when I change the clutch because I just put new reline mtl in the tranny a few months ago. When I remove the tranny from the block will tranny fluid spill all over the place? I was under the impression that the actual gearbox was isolated from the clutch/pressure plate so this would not happen?

Drain it into a clean pan then store it until you are ready to fill. Check it for debris and contamination (visually). If it is good, then there shouldn't be any problem re-using it. As for keeping it in the tranny, I would probably spill it all over the place and then have to work around or in it. But if you don't think you will spill, then go for it.
