Angry Engine Noise

Man if its not one thing its another. Ok, I am running a GSR motor with skunk2 cams, JDM ITR pistons and skunk2 internals. Compression is around 11.5:1 I can now hear this rattling or knocking sound when the engine is under heavy load. For example, when you are in 1st and shift into 2nd, at wide open throttle the noise is there. Actually my friends and I discovered that the car can be at a stand still and if you tap the gas all the way to the floor, you hear that noise. We checked the plugs and they were fine. One guy said it might be piston slap. I really hope not. I've got a block guard as well. If anyone can diagnosis this problem I would appricate it.

compression is little high for the steets i think, try higher octane gas. but sounds like detonation to me.

hum... I don't think any noice like that is running good...

gsr_sol,

the knocking can be a sign of detonation, depending how you define knocking. If the knocking sound more like a pinging sound, then you might need to adjust your valves. [can't really tell you what it is without hearing what the sound is]. But can you find out where the rattling is coming from? can you give us more details? Rattling can be pretty serious, if that sound is coming from the engin. I would suggest taking it to a mech, and have them check it out. We can be mistaken because, sound definition from one person can be different from another.

I think that he know what I meant to say. I know that noise can be a bad thing, but sometimes you can't just freak out with noises because you will never find them. Like you mention in your respond, is it in the engine then I would start worring about but he also states that he has an engine that doesn't come in the car from factory, and everytime that you make big changes, there are more likely to be noises and rattling around that werent there before. It's very hard to describe a noise over this board. Good luck. I hate when people just try to call you stupid

Might be your octane. Try a higher octane to match those cams. Also have you done a valve adjustment? Probably need one of those to.

is it making a "ping" noise? because if it is, its definitly a detontaion. very dangerous.

not calling you stupid. But don't tell people it is ok, if it "seems" to run ok then it is ok. Engin noise is something that must be carefully looked at. Your post here, can lead someone into thinking it is really ok, if it run ok at normal thorttle.... and then when their engin dies, what will you say?

Did you read what I post, GEZZ, sorry DAD!! Plus is my opinion and if you don't like it don't take it. Basicly ,stop telling me what to say or what to do.

GSR SOL, Good luck to you and I hope that you find your problem soon. I do hate noises in my car too, specially if they weren't there before. I hope is nothing serious, and I wish I could actually hear the noise because is very hard to tell you by just knowing that is a noise. Cheers

Just had a valve adjustment done and the shop didn't hear the noise. Neither did I until I pulled into work this morning. I hate when that happens. Anyway, its not really a "ping" sound. It sounds like Elenore (Gone In 60 Seconds) when it was cutting off on Nick in the street. A knocking sound is really quite accurate to describe it. Back to the drawing board. An ignition system might be my next step

I'm thinking you might have spun a bearing. I had a weird knocking noise from my engine a few weeks ago. It turns out I spun a bearing and that in turned screwed up the crank, which made the knocking noise.

Not good. I better have that checked out. Was the noise loud or faint. This one is only heard when the car in under load. Doens't drive any different though. Might turn out to be nothing, but better safe than sorry.
