I am buying a new exhaust this week... what should I buy ( on a budget) I was thinking a custom piped 3" exhaust with magnaflow muffler- I think that would be a decent system... any thoughts?
well, what type of hp do you planning on running?
you should plan how far you want to go, and from there pick out what mods you want, and what will work best with that setup.
here is a clip from another post a while back:
Here are the proper published diameters for specific motor outputs:
"2-1/4" up to 210HP @ the flywheel (about 180-185 whp)
2-3/8" (60mm) up to 235HP @ the flywheel (about 200-207 whp)
2-1/2" up to 265HP @ the flywheel (about 225-235 whp)
2-3/4" up to 325HP @ the flywheel (about 275-285 whp)
3" big for big HP (Forced Induction: > 275 whp)"
please do your research, use the search funcion on the board.
hope this helps

3" will be WAY too big dude, you'll probably lose power until maybe 6000rpm, maybe. The biggest you want to go without F/I is usually 2.5", and even that is too big for some applications. I have a 60mm (2.36") exhaust, and I still have plenty of flow to "grow into" as I do more mods.

Its also soo sad that at the larger diameter exhaust piping that the sound will be so deafening that its usually not an option. That is the soul reason why I have decided not to go with the Thermal 3" Turbo version for my car. If that was not the case, I would have gotton on it in a heartbeat.
geeze, thanks for the replies ... I didnt realize that I was so ignorant about exhaust sizes! I guess you learn something new every day. I guess I will just get a 2" exhaust because I am only planning on making about 160hp @ the wheels ( in the future)... I just want my car running well right now, once I graduate from university then I will start spending the big cash and buy a new car, maybe an RSX type S , so anyways thanks for the help.
Yea just because the pipe is 3 inches doesnt mean u'll get more flow. It will just hurt you more than anything. Same goes for dual exhaust. Unless you have something like a 6 cyl. then dual exhaust will just make you lose power. More flow on small engines is not neccisarily a good thing.

If I were you I'd still get bigger than a 2" for sure, I don't know about G2's like yours, but at least for G3's the GS-R comes with 2" stock, and the RS/LS/GS/SE is also 1.91", so upgrading to a 2" wouldn't help much. 2.25" would surely not be too big even for stock, my 60mm (2.36") is fine also, I'm only planning on 150-155whp and my exhaust should be about the right size.

I have 2.5" on my car. It backfires when you are slowing down, sound like you got a lot of work done, sometimes it's nice but also annoys. It's very loud, but it might be my muffler. I guess with the 2.25" or the 2.36" piping, you'll be happy.
for the basic set-up u have acheive 2.25 is good....custom pipin is ok if its done at a good shop but most of the time they crip your exhaust some way and this will scrafice alot of performance........don't think bigger is better...its not the case when it comes to performance....you must have the support mods in order to enlarge your exhaust piping....such FI
