HELP please!!! Miss driving my Integra.

Recently changed my clutch out. Had to drop the transmission since I didn't have a cherry picker at the time. All went well, my clutch is fixed, but now I have a probelm. Went to hook back up the starter, wires started smoking. I've looked to see if maybe we somehow pinched a wire between the motor and tranny in the process. Don't see anything. And when I hook up the tester, positive end of tester into positive battery cable, negative end, hooked to ground, my motor is producing a positive without a battery present. Not that it has a current running through it or anything, but the tester jumps all the way up. I am baffled. Does anyone have a clue as to what may be going on? I'm sure the problem is staring me directly in the face.
