okay, i went to ace sunday & bought 8 plain old washers that i could tell wouldn't fit around the head of the 14mm bolts. i had to buy a 1/2 inch drive socket extension & a 1/2 inch to 3/8 adaptor & also had to use the long 3/8 extension to use my torque wrench to break the bolts loose.
i was worried the spring would, uh, spring if i didn't support the rotor, so i put the jack under it, but that wasn't an issue.
the only difficult part was getting the bolts started with the washers inbetween the bracket & the unibody (??) while forcing the rotor back to where it belongs. my stepdad had to start the first one on each side while i pushed up on the rotor. all together minus the trip to ace, it took about 30 minutes.
hope this helps people.
