Well, I have a 96gsr. All it has is a AEM CAI in terms of engine mods(dc header not yet installed). I dont really drive all that aggressive for the most part. I shift between 3-4k, and probably only hit vtec once or twice a week. My smog numbers were crsytal clean (6, 6, 4)..something of that sort. About half of the average values. Well i got about 79 miles for half a tank in this past week. Im not throwing and check engine lights either
any ideas??? besides someone is stealing my gas, because i can see the drop each time i drive.

Fill it up and try again. If you're really burning that much gas check for leaks in the system, then the filter, then the O2 sensor (a bad O2 sensor will cause the system to run rich). If it's not any of these then I'd bring it in. You're too young for Injector issues, and so long as your using the right gas I'd be stumped. Good luck.
I agree, improperly installed fuel components (causing fuel leaks)can always cause mysterious fuel consumption problems... What I do think should definitely be done is the replacement of the oxygen sensor... on an OBD 2 equipped vehicle such as yours the 02 sensor should be replaced every 5 years or 100,000 miles... this falls under regular maintenance... since this car is OBD2 you would have definitely had a check engine light if the 02 sensor had simply gone bad... but this usually isn't the case on a 96 with no prior problems... what is most likely happening is that the 02 sensor is simply not responding as quickly as it should to the ever changing oxygen levels in the exhaust... or the 02 sensor has become miscalibrated, thus thinking that optimal fuel levels are too lean, and that rich fuel levels are optimal (remember 14.7 to 1?)... furthermore, remove your spark plugs and check them to see if indeed you are running too rich, if you are then the plugs will be black, sooty, and sometimes smell like gasoline... This is about all you can do without the aid of a scan tool...

i agree you should check your O2 censor, I just replaced the O2 censor on my girl's car and she was getting terrible gas mileage, but her engine light was also on and it was puffing black smoke indicating it was too rich. You should maybe have someone drive behind you to see if it's blowing any black smoke.

O2 Censor? Is that some who tells the O2 what it can and can't say? Sensor, Sensor, Sensor. As in, something that Senses.
Do a couple of things to see if it's rich: smell the emissions (not for too long), or drive in 3rd at about 55 mph and shift into 2nd (this is when you will see black smoke). Still, at 16-17 mpg I'd check the whole system from tank to injectors for leaks. They may be hard to spot, but I'll bet that's what this is. HTH.

Atleast i was half in the bag when i wrote mine what's your excuse. J/K
i was getting some bad gas mileage too. not as bad as ur getting. about 22 with normal driving. but i had cracked DC headers and a bad o2 before my smog check.. changed them to stock headers and a new o2. now im getting like 28 a gallon. before i was getting about 220 a tank, now about 260 to 280 so just changing out those 2 made a big difference for me for some reason. but im pretty sure i dont know what im talking about. just tryin to help out
