intake air temp sensor ecu error

i am getting a cell code for intake air temp sensor (failure?) my mechanic pulled the code from it yesterday, and cleared it, and said that it ran fine after. but now my car putters every once and a while, same as it did when it came up with the CEL. so if the CEL code was for that sensor, i should probably replace it right? now, has anyone here ever done it? is it easy enough for a novice such as myself? (to do in the freezing cold) :P
or should i just let my mechanic do it? and around how much would it cost to buy a replacement?

if you want to read about how it happened see post:
never thought it would happen to me!

thanks

the Intake Air Temp sensor is an easy fix/replacement. it is only held by 2 philips screws.

the IAT sensor is the one sitting on top of the first runner on my 94 GSR manifold.

double check for codes again. sometimes codes go away when u turn off ur car. but the engine code/s is still kept in memory as long as the battery is not disconnected.

hth.

he reset the ecu, but it still putters sometimes, would a defective IATS cause this random puttering, its like driving a diesel or a lawnmower.
are those sensors cheap? is there a way to clean them maybe? or should i just replace it.
he also said if the problem persists that he was going to test it. how would i go about doing that? what are some ways of troubleshooting a sensor problem to realize that you actually need one as opposed to replacing it to see if the new one fixes the problem.
thanks

the IAT sensor should be around 50 bucks. check with ur local dealer for specific pricing.

check the IAT sensor. if the probe has some signs of wear like melting and such, then it's time to replace it.

if ur car is sputtering, check ur spark plugs. inspect them and replace as needed.

troubleshooting is a long process. there are many variables that can be taken into to pinpoint the source. make sure that u have a HELM's manual. this is a great investment.

goodluck.
