I have a 97 GSR and at the tracks today i mishifted trying to go to 4th gear and instead went to 2nd gear...(so i was on 3rd trying to go to 4th but went to 2nd gear instead). and so now im getting what seems to be a clicking/knock/tap noise that seems to be coming from the distributor area...its more like somethings loose thats making that noise. I was told that it could be the distributor, the shaft of the distributor is probably loose/broke. Im not sure if its anything related in the motor(valve, loose rocker). When i give it gas and in neutral the noise does get a little louder but nothing severe like anything related in the engine, i was told. Idle is also normal. There is also a whining noise now eachtime you switch gears, but goes away when gears engage. could this be my Distributor?? Thanks for the help.
I did the exact same thing with my 91 ls and a couple of days later my engine crapped out and I had to replace it, it freaking sucked.
I'm guessing that your rpm's went to like 9,00+ like mine, you probably tore up your valves or something, I feel for you man. GO TO A MECHANIC IMMEDIATELY!, you might be able to just replace valves, if you drive it around normally it might do what mine did and say bye bye.
Does your car still turn on now? Shifting from 3rd at redline to second gear leaves your engine spinning at 10000-11000 rpm. Have it checked immediately.
Some engines might not give up now but it will later. There was once a civic that mis-shifted but the car was running for another 6 months and then the engine gave up. He took it to the dealer and scanned the ecu and found out that the engine was over-revved.
Most likely you bent a valve or destroyed your pressure plate or the bearings.
Have it check it out. Same thing happen to me twice, first time it was a valve, second time my pressure plate was destroyed. Either case, you can still drive on it, just not for a long time.
thanks everyone...i thought it was the distributor but now im not so sure. the noise seems to also be coming from the cylinder next to the distributor...but i guess ima have to take it in to the shop.
anywase how much am i expecting to pay if i did bend the valves? are they going to rebuild it??
just went to check on the car and now its having a hard time starting. you can hear it click but does not start. you have to give it a couple of trys to start. does this mean it could also be related the the pressure plate?
oh yea it started to have problems after i removed and looked at the distributor...would this change my timing??...i marked where it was before too and reinstalled where the markings were.
Possibly. I don't know the inner workings of the electronics on Honda engines that much, but I know a little about Nissan RB's. With the RB, there is a crank angle sensor which reads off the exhaust camshaft (I assume the Honda crank sensor is in the distributor). Even if you mark the point at which the sensor was mounted before removing it, you will need to have the timing reset with a timing light for an exact result.

when the car is idling listen and pay very close attention to the noise. step on the clutch and see if the noise goes away. if this happens it is your throw out bearing. i did the same exact thim to my gs-r and i'm just getting a whole new clutch put it.

Hey just went out to check on the car and the noise does stop when u step on the clutch?? how can the t.o.bearing go out from mishifting to 2nd?? please do tell me more about it...did u do the same thing too?
