ls tranny or b16b tranny

me and my friend was debating on which is better in a drag race, having a LS Tranny w/ a B16b (longer gears) or having a B16b w/ B16b tranny (shorter gears), which one do you think would win?....i said a B16b w/ a LS Tranny

Well the B16B has an LSD while the B18B does not... big advantage right now. So I am going to use the B16A tranny instead to pare down the differences to just gearing.

Having had both in my car, I would say the B16 would be faster... simply more torque multiplication in each gear, although you have to upshift sooner. The only hesitation I would have is if the powerband of the LS motor. Mine felt quite a bit better with the B16 tranny because my powerband really comes on strong 5500rpm and up without really dropping off til redline. The lightweight flywheel I have also adds to the advantage of a shorter 2nd and 3rd gear. With a stock LS motor, there's a pretty bad lag after about 6200-6300rpm, so I wonder if the rpm you're landing at with the B16 tranny would miss the stock LS's power between 5-6k and leave you sitting in the no-man's land after 6300.

Even stock though I still think the B16 tranny would be faster. The in-gear acceleration is just a night and day difference.

Some true, although the ls does have longer gears and does allow for more torque to the ground threw a longer gear ratio, in 1/2nd gears the b16 would rip, but on a hwy run, from a high 2nd or low 3rd, i think the ls tranny would eat it up, alot of people run ls trannys when boosting high to get the full effect of a longer powerband and more torque..i have a few friends that run b16 trannies with a ls final drive..dont ask me why but they like it..they have turbos tho..

Umm what? Longer gears = less torque multiplication to the ground, not more.

The B16's 1st gear is the same as LS. 3-4-5 (highway speeds) is where the B16 tranny is most different from the LS. Those short gears on the highway can and DO destroy the LS tranny... I know, I've had both in the same car on the same day.

Why bother with an LS final drive in a B16 tranny? It's only 3% longer. I only swapped my FD so I could run the ITR LSD... it is a tiny bit shorter which is a nice side benefit, but the difference is so small it's imperceptible, to me at least. It's only a 100rpm difference at 70mph in 5th.
