LSD question

Where does it go? To get one, would I have to swap my Y80 for an S80?

I don't really know the tranny codes so I'm not really sure what trannies they go to. As far as the LSD, it replaces your stock open differential. This means that the shop or whoever does the job will have to break the tranny open to get to it. They take out the old diff. and put in the new one. Also, if you don't have bearings for the differential yet onit, you will have to get those. They cost me about $65 each (need 2) from the deal.

Ok, so I just looked at the chart in the tranny sticky. The Y80 is the GSR tranny and the S80 is 98+ JDM R tranny. Is that right, the chart had multiple listings for the codes.
You can put a LSD in there. So you could spend about a grand on the unit from KAZZ or Quaife, but these should be specific for your car. Now, you can get the JDM R LSD and put in there too. I think they are going on ebay for like $400 and they already have bearings. Another option is to get the S80 and put the whole tranny in there. I like the idea of having the shorter gears... some don't.
Basically, you can do whatever you want. I'm not sure how easily the JDM LSD goes in, but it can't be that difficult for a competent shop. Does anyone know if the JDM R LSD needs extra work to go into the USDM GSR tranny?

*JDM R = JDM Integra Type R

No. As far as anyone can figure, S80/Y80 stamps mean nothing as to what kind of tranny it is between Integras. The only way to tell is to crack it open and see what you find. Sad but true through the research I've done. The B18C5s (USDM had LSD too, there are also a few B18C1s in Japan that had LSD) have "LSD" stamped on them too however.

The ITR LSD will fit in the GS-R tranny with no problems, although you'll need those new roller bearings (which btw shouldn't cost $65/ea, that's like retail or a little above... dealer quoted me $52 and I said screw you guys, got them from acuraparts247.com for $37/ea plus shipping I believe). For the LS tranny you need a GS-R or ITR final drive kit in order for it to work. In which case (IMO, since I have one sitting in my room) you should just buy the LS-specific Quaife diff if you want a 1-way diff. It's more aggressive, smoother-operating, and warranteed for life including racing.

Be forewarned that labor is very expensive for this. I have no problem at all paying my mechanic/racer friend $300+ to do mine (hopefully this weekend) because I know shops will charge $500 and up... meaning $500 is a good (great) price, and $750 is about average. Make friends with a mechanic pronto.

Shops around here charge around $428 with the new bearings included if the tranny is already out. Tack on another $200 if you drop off the car with the tranny in. This is just labor and the bearings....

Yup that is a typical price. I found a reputable shop around here that would do it for $175 (I already have bearings) or $440 total if the tranny is still in the car, which is a great deal... although they said that price could go up if they run into problems like stuck bolts. In total with the tranny in, it's billed as 10-12 hours of work typically.

Keep in mind that this is a good thing to do if you're doing a clutch/flywheel as well since the tranny will be out anyway for that.

You will also need a set of shims for the install. The differential uses a spacing shim in order to get the clearances just right, and Honda makes 20 different sizes at $8 a pop. You won't know which one you need until you have it all apart, and it's not something the dealer has in stock either. I had read that most Quaifes use the smallest size so I just bought a range of 5 thinner ones.

Somebody's obsessed

I thought USDM front ends were superior, remember??

Thanks alot for the replies! I have already installed the clutch on my own, so I'm sure I'd be able to install an LSD. My parent's Infiniti I30 (FWD) has an LSD and it feels so good around the corners. Of course, maybe that's just the over-powered steering pump. I want to drive Type R, just to see what it feels like.

Right on... just be forewarned that you need to take the speedometer gear out of the old diff and put it in the new one... these are very fragile and are not sold separately so if you break it you need another stock diff. Just a heads-up.

Also shop around for which LSD you want, don't just default to the ITR one. While it's a decent LSD, it's not that aggressive and can't handle more than around 275whp. There are a few different types of LSDs which work in different ways, and even brands that are of the same type have unique characteristics.

I don't think I'll be doing it for a while, since I have to remove the transmission and I can't be without a car right now. I would just want something that doesn't have parts that wear out, like a clutch type LSD would.
