Use Honda MTF. Normally gear oil is thick (either 75w-90 or 75w-145). Temp usage of tranny fluid is same as engine oil, which is way thinner than gear oil.

you can't buy the mtf at the auto parts i tried and they said you can only buy it a honda.
it's like 5.39 a quart @ honda and you only need 3 and it's easier to change than an oil change to me.

What do you mean by "Temp usage of tranny fluid is same as engine oil, which is way thinner than gear oil."
Are you saying he can temp. use engine oil as tranny fluid? I have never personally changed the tranny fluid, but it is separate, and what kind of fluid is Honda MTF, is it more like an ATF or more of a gear oil?

Up until the new Honda MTF's came out, the Helms called for use of 10w-30 motor oil in the tranny (manual not auto) for temporary usage. That means when you don't have any tranny fluid around. And when you have the chance to, change it out for the proper fluids.
As mentioned earlier, gear oil is thick. In the rage of 75w-90 compared to the 10w-30 that the manual suggest as temporary fluid for the tranny. So with that info, its obvious that the gear oil's weight of 75w90 is too thick for the tranny.
Honda MTF is basically tranny fluid, but with their own additives for the manual tranny. The auto tranny fluid is basically Dexron fluid with their own additives. It is highly recommended to use only Honda fluids considering you can't add the additives afterwards like many other manufacturer's do on their diffs.

Ok, thanks, now that makes sence. Well the last time my tranny fluid got changed was at the usual shop I take the car to. I assume he would have used a product equivalent to Honda MTF if he didn't already use it. Well i May change it anyway here soon before I put the car away for the winter. If I don't do it now, I will prob. do it next spring.

Many people use redline or any other fluid made for manual trannies. It shouldn't harm it at all as long as you use the correct stuff, and not excessive oil weights.

They actually sell funnels with the hose attached nowadays at Kragen. I know because i just had to switch fluids.
The Tranny has to go w/o a fluid flush for quite some time so why not just buy the Honda stuff and be done with it?
