Go here

scoll down to the engine section and look at what they have for the ignition setup on that N/A 10 sec car! That should answer your question!

Yup I know, and remember...

You can lead a horse to water but, you just can't make him drink.

Ahh well, thanks again I always love those illustrations. Dollars to Donuts we Still didn't dissuade him though.

I am going to spot face my head to match my 84mm bore, so it is an exception to the rule. Flame travel increases = More spark needed, hence the upgrade ignition system. Granted Erick's Racing has an 85mm bore BUT uses a stock combustion chamber, and he is not going to be boosting to achieve upwards of 300whp on a daily basis... My MSD Digital 6 is in the mail from Summit, the 2 step rev limiter will come in handy as well. It seems most people use the MSD rev limiter instead of the built in EMS function as well. An upgraded ignition may not be necessary for most people, but I think that it still has its place among Honda performance enthusiasts. Just my $.02

fyi, spot facing is not even recommended by the top headworkers in the country (for hondas and acuras, that is). Tom at portflow advised against this. portflow http://www.portflow.com informed me that they will not open up the cc's to 84.xxmm. tom said "it's too hard to blend the chamber when you do that".

now, i also talked to javier at jg www.jgenginedynamics.com. he said that they don't open the full chamber to 84.xxmm, but they have a special "tool" for their Sonnen machine that will allow them to de-shroud the area around the valves - this seems a bit better than nothing at all.

personally, i'd leave the head's cc as it is. i can't afford to throw $1000+ on a head package and have it turn out to be a dog.

my 2 cents.

"The benefit is more torque and higher cylinder pressures/static CR. The downside is that the spark flame must travel further and so you may want to upgrade your ignition system to get a higher spark energy to travel to the bootstrap." - Tuan on HV

"spot facing means the head bowl diameter (81mm) is also machined and polished out to the same bore diameter as the block's new bore. it ensures the quench area (mechanical octane boost) is maximized and the edge of the bowl is extended....this can be a hot spot source." - Tuan on HV

Portflow I respect... JG on the other hand The reason to open them up is to eliminate the hot spot that the edge between the mismatched bores forms, which is prone to detonation. Some people have had great luck running larger bore blocks with stock heads, but there is also no reason against spot facing... It may help, it may not, but it will definitely not hurt. The compression loss may be made up for via higher compression pistons and the upgraded ignition can take care of the need for a stronger spark. The B20 uses an 81mm head but that is because Honda used the b18b to save some change, and it is not subjected to the demands of a high horsepower engine with forced induction. It also is not very expensive, it runs about $150-250 to get your head spot faced. I am buying a used head and will be sending it off to Import Builders, who will again send it off to Portflow for the IB Dominator head package plus the spot facing. If Portflow cannot do it, I am quite surprised, as Golden Eagle and VS Racing are able to do it. Perhaps they have different standards but that is another thread in itself... I will throughly research the headwork before I get it done.
Matt

those articles that Tuan wrote were done sometime ago, back when Endyn was still up, i believe. i've talked to some other headporters too, like elias @ alaniz and he almost said the same thing. don't get me wrong, i'm sure that these headporters can do it. and i take their word more since "they" have the hands-on knowledge about these things. this is also by no means trying to disuade u to spearhead ur spot-facing project. i think it's a great idea. i really do. but then again, i don't want to be the one saying "i told u so" in the end.

in sum, i really appreciate the research that u've been doing regarding ur project. please keep us informed on how things turns up and i'll do the same once i get my head back from the shop.

cheerios!
