need advice for check light code 23

p1259: knock sensor problem HELP!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wanted someone to help me with a problem that i am getting very fustruated with? I have a 98 GS-R that is throwing a code 23 or p1259 which is a knock sensor problem. I diagnose it and there was no other problem other than the knock sensor. My cousin and I took the engine apart and rebuilt it. After we assemble all the parts back together again he hooked up the harness and dropped it back into the car. When we started the car it was great everything was running. But some how the check engine light came on. It was throwing that code, We look it up and found that it was the knock sensor, even though we could not hear any knocking in the engine. My cousin told me that it is ok to drive but the vtec is off so for me not to push the motor it can cause me motor to crash. soon enough after i replace the knock sensor with a new one and reset the ecu but found to notice that it came back on. I check the wire to be attach to the knock and everything is fine, I feel as if the knock sensor i purchase might of been defected so i took it in to replace it. I hook it up recheck the wire to see if there is any lose or cuts plug it in but still the engine light came back on. I am completely drained and need of help so i can get the problem fix for a smog check? PLEASE HELP!

ok.. well.. first of all.. did you pin your car to see what code was being thrown?? if you didnt pin it, then you should do that first and see what code comes up? what kind of engine management are you running? and why is your vtec off? your check engine light might be because of your vtec not being on. if you replaced the knock snesor, and everything is tight, then your knock sensor should be fine.

ok I check the problem out by going in to the shop and have the mechanic diagnose the problem to find out that the only problem that is throwing is the knock sensor. I try replacing it once and it did not do much but to throw back the same code even when i reset the ecu it still came back on after 30 to 40 sec of starting up the car. my vtec is ok there seems to be no problem to it thou. I running a stock 98 b18c1 motor a original p72 GSR motor. My cousin said it to be my ecu being defected could that be it? One last thing when i reset the ecu i just pull the plug off of the ecu, could that be that when resetting the ecu i need to disconnect the battery too to stop it from frying. I think that, that might be one of the reason? or could it not?

sorry i havent got back to you. if you havent fixed the problem, i have no clue what it could be. plug in another ecu and see what happenes. make sure the ecu is not defective. if the code still comes up, it might be faulty wiring. other than that, i am tapped out of possibilities.

If you bought the replacement sensor from advance or autozone then that is most likely your problem. If you dont have continuity between the sensor and the ecm then you have a broken wire not a bad ecu. If the car runs chances are the ecm is fine. Usually if it is a wiring problem the code will reset as soon as the vehicle is started. If the sensor is bad it will usually take 2-3 drive cycles before the check engine light comes back on.
