never thought it would happen to me!

well, today, in NY, we had some nasty rains, plus, melting snow, so there were huge puddles everywhere....
so you know whats next....
i think i might have taken in a bit. i avoided puddles the best i could, and only went through one deep one, and a smaller one, but might have taken in some water.
here is the story. after i went through the puddles, i saw no problems, drove about 1/2 a mile and noticed nothing.
went to go eat some chinese food, was in there for 1-2 hours, left, started my car, no problems. then once i got onto the main road and started speeding up a bit, my car was puttering, and stuff, and if i layed off the gas a bit, it would putter, then go back to normal. durring this time the check engine light would blink. i drove about another 1/2 mile and then stopped at someones house for about an hour or so. came out, warmed up the car, and drove another 5 miles or so, this time it seemed to drive a bit better, (could go a bit faster without it puttering) but it was still a bit scary. durring this time the check engine light blinked, then went solid. when i left my friends house, was there about an hour or so, it was puttering very little at idle, but.. i could smell gas from the tailpipe. check engine light still on. now after this about 1/2 mile from his house was the parkway. i took it on there was doing about 50mph, and no puttering the whole way. and i think it puttered like once right off the exit ramp. then i drove it home (another 1/2) and left it there. on my way home i could take it up to 5k rpms or so with no problems. i didnt take it any higher cause i was scared to break something. aside from puttering i didnt notice any other problems, other than the gas smell. right now the check engine light is on. it was late and raining so i didnt check for any codes. but from the sounds of it, maybe, if i did injest some water, it just wet my plugs or something, and they dried out? or maybe it is some other problem all together?
what do you guys think it is, and what should i do?
thanks, cause i really need some help.
and i always used to look down on the bypass valves. might get one just for the piece of mind. if my engine is still ok. or i might get a comptech icebox and get rid of my aem.
thanks again

I would be willing to bet you didn't suck any water in but that you have an electrical issue. I had an old GTI that I had the same type of thing with turned out that when I took the ground strap off cleaned it and made sure it was dry the prob went away. I would check out some electrical connections that could potentially get contaminated with moisture, it only costs effort and you will most likely clear it up. Good luck
