There is a simple way to check your CV joints (the driveshaft between the trans and the wheel) Find a quiet parking lot or somewhere next to a large wall. Turn the wheel all the way to one side. slowly give it gas, creep on the throttle basically. If you hear click . . . .click . . .click . .click .click then thats probably the cv joint. If your dont hear it, turn the wheel to the other way and repeat. however, what you're describing sounds more like a heatshield or something loose. Get under your car like the rest of us and check things out

Either way, I find that checking for noises helps when the car is right near a large wall, or something that can bounce the noise back at you.
