No resonator = very loud??
ok, i'm having a little trouble with my exhaust (Greddy SP catback).
i bought it second hand and it was made for a coupe. I had a friend of mine who works at Midas extend the pipe between the cat and the resonator so that it would fit. Things have been good for almost a year but now i have an exhaust leak somewhere. i haven't had time to get under the car and check it out. i do remember a month or two ago looking under and seeing that the pipe that was used to extend the real exhaust piping had lines on it, as if it were cracking. i figure this is possible seeing as how Midas probably doesn't use the best materials out there. anyway, i'm taking it in to a real exhaust shop in a few weeks to install a carsound cat (damn i'm going off on a tangent lol).
ok, the question:
when i got the exhaust i could see that the resonator had started to seperate from the exhaust piping on one side and this stuff was coming out that looked like metal ribbons. the guy who installed my exhaust welded it back up but i have a feeling it's not holding up anymore.
would i gain/lose power by having the exhaust shop take that whole section out and laying a new straight pipe? also, how much louder is my exhaust going to be?
You won't lose power as long as all the welds are smoothe and the piping diameter stays the same. You might even gain 1-2 in the upper RPM but, not worth doing just for that possible gain.
As for sound,,, it will become more raspy and higher pitched, and may not be nearly as nice as whatever it sounds like now.
My personal adivce is to just get by as long as you can until it all falls apart and do minimal work for repair. Then save some $$$ and get a new catback.
If you can't afford that now then of course you can fix it but, it sounds like you need more work than is really worth it. Just my .02........................

ok, i took my car to a muffler shop and this is what i was told.
the midas guys used some cheap piping that couldn't handle the heat very well. the muffler shop guy said that "extended" area could be replaced with better quality piping and that the rest of the greddy piping down to the muffler was ok.
after bringing up rattling, he poked around the heat shields which all seemed to be nicely bolted down. he then gave my muffler a few shakes and told me that it's pretty common for the piping that runs thru the muffler to seperate and rattle. anyone know how true this is?
i remember back in high school, a friend of mine got a greddy muffler from his cousin. the inside had been gutted out for the same reason mentioned, the piping had come loose and started rattling.
just wondering if i'm getting jerked around.
my new plan is to use the greddy piping with either a 5zigen fireball or apex'i N1 muffler.
I posted almost the exact same thing. I had the same problem. I wish I would have known about the rust and sepration problem before I bought my Greddy.
i have a 2000 si with a greddy sport. after 4 breaks on the welds i'm getting rid of the p.o.s. i'll never buy another exhaust from them again. i just ordered the skunk2 cat back. it better hold up better than the greddy.

It will hold up well. The Skunk2 catback is a very high quality setup... Very nice stuff. It's made by Invidia (RS*R fame.)
But, trust me when I tell you it is LOUD!
Insert the included butt plug and it gets better for daily use.
hey 1greyteg....what's your thoughts on the Thermal R&D. it's all polished stainless. i know it's not the same style as the skunk2 but do you know about the quality.

I love it. It's very nice and has a great sound. The piping is 2 1/4" or 3" nothing inbetween unfortunately. And the price is right.
A good friend of mine has it mated to a testpipe with a Toda header and a B18C5 in his Civic hatch and it sounds great. He is switching though to the Fujitsubo for less noise, better flow and lighter weight. He also runs Toda B's and requires a bit more flow than average. He is also going to SCCA solo2 nationals this year.

A.
thanks for the insight and quick response. the deal with the skunk2 fell through so i ordered the thermal instead. i couldn't pass up the deal.

I'm confident you will be satisfied. Make sure to post up your review after install.
And keep in mind that the Thermal is not quiet either and does Not have a silencer available. I am speaking of the Regular Thermal, not the Stealth model.
yeah it should be in around the 18th. i know it'll be louder than the greddy sport, especially with the test pipe. and i ordered the standered not stealth. i'll let everyone know how i like it.
