tech wrench OK rebuilding my engine any suggestions? I need help...

ok so I finally decided what I'm going to do with my 98 GS-R, I just hit 80k miles the engine is running strong the clutch seems fine but I want to rebuild it and get it ready for some nice boost. I plan on doing it all at once at my neighbors garage. It will be a learning experience but they talked me into doing it and offered the help. My father, brother and neighbor who have all worked on cars since they were about 6 offered to help. My neighbor is a profession mechanic and works on imports all day long so I'm lucky there and he said he would reserve some space in his garage for me. He has all the tools and everything I could ever need so I'm pretty excited about this but now is the tough part. I admit it I know the basics on car mechanics, I can change my own oil , spark plugs, tires lol, and I even put on my own fog lights and clear corners lol. I want to do everything at once I currently have $2,000 saved up for the project and plenty more to come over the next several months. Well I want to rebuild the engine, I was told I should buy rods, pistons, cams, but what else do I need? I plan on going with mainly aftermarket parts but I'm not sure if there is a benefit on certain oem parts compared to certain aftermarket parts. What should I buy to make it strong enough to handle 9psi of boost off a JRSC. My clutch is strong but I am going to replace it with an aftermarket one, I will prolly take civ's advice and go with the one recommended. This car will no longer be a daily driver as I am getting a small 4wd truck or something like that to get me around. I would really appreciate some advice on what all I should buy. I do want this car to be street legal but I also want something I can build up fast enough to race it at our import nights at the local drag strip. I gotta beat those 14 second neons . Sorry for such a long post but I'm just lost on what to buy. People keep telling buy this brand and buy that brand but they have no experience, they are just basing it on what they heard. So if anyone here has the time to list out a few parts that would be awesome.
Thanks a hell of a lot in advance,
Dan

Oh and I wanted to mention currently I have an Akimoto ram air intake, thats all I have done to the engine, and yes I put it on my self lol.

Well, 2k will get you started on a good block, but it'll take more if you want a killer engine. Go to www.import builders .c om (no spaces) and look at their block packages. Look at block package number 22. This is a 2L GSR engine. This is what I think you should do. I know a guy that did this to his engine and turbo'd the puppy! Wow! So use it as a model for what you're going to do.

-JE 9.5:1 to 10:1 compression pistons 84.5mm in size
-Eagle Rods
-Darton or GE iron sleeves (different people like different ones, but get some iron sleeves...a must for boost.)
-After the sleeves bore it out to 84.5mm
-Have the bores cross hatched and honed
-New main and rod bearings
-ARP rod bolts
-ARP head studs
-New stock head gasket (to work as a fuse)
-O-ring the block too since you'll be running boost
-Balance and blueprint the bottom end
-New seals down below too
-Have your crank micropolished too, but don't waste your time on knife edging

After that you pretty much will have a solid bottom end. If you want to take more time and money have the head done. See www.import build ers .co m for their head packages as a guide.

-Port and Polish
-3 angle valve job
-Titanium retainers
-New springs
-New valve seals
-And get your head resurfaced. Note, this is different from milling the head.

Since its not your daily driver remove your power steering and A/C to free up some extra ponies. Get some drag slicks on 15" rims. Don't forget to get your car dyno tuned! Save some cash for that.

Don't o-ring your block for 9 psi. Waste of money and a hassle for no benefit. Any good aftermarket (Cometic, etc.) headgasket will be fine.

Wow they got some sweet block packages on that site. But for me they are all over doing it. I just really need a setup that would be strong enough and reliable enough to run 9psi of boost off the JRSC. If I had $3900 I would jump on that right now but I don't and by the time I get $3900 I wouldn't have enough to get the supercharger till end of summer anyways which would suck. Thanks a lot for the list though.
Thanks again,
Dan

The project has begun, I just ordered the Helms manual for 98 integra and a DC Sports 4-1 Ceramic Header. I'll keep you guys posted and I'm sure I will have plenty of pictures once we get the engine out. And if anyone knows any other sites for block rebuild kits please let me know.
Thanks for the help so far guys,
Dan

All your REALLY need for 9 psi is to go through the motor and make sure everything is in good shape. Get all new water pump, oil pump, bearings, rings and seals. I would upgrade all the fasteners with ARP stuff. In addition, while it is apart, have the crank and rods shotpeened and magnafluxed. You should be fine. A billet block girldle is also a good idea.

If you are worried about the stock internals and just want to play it safe, get rods and pistons. The stock crank is more than strong enough for what you are doing. If money is not a real issue, you could bore it out a bit. If you do this, you need new sleeves and you might as well go with ductile iron, as they are better for boost.

Good luck with your project.

Ok after reading over several posts does this sounds like a probable plan?

1. ACT HDSS (Heavy Duty pressure plate, Organic Street Disc)
2. Clutchmasters lightened aluminum flywheel
3. Water pump
4. Oil pump
5. New main and rod bearings
6. JE 9.5:1compression pistons 84.5mm in size
7. Eagle Rods
8. Golden Eagle iron sleeves
9. After the sleeves bore it out to 84.5mm
10. Have the bores cross hatched and honed
11. Crank magnafluxed
12. Aftermarket head gasket
13. JRSC w/ 9psi Pully

That should be all I need to get this project rolling right?
Thanks,
Dan

You should be fine - except you might as well go with a full ARP stud kit while you have the motor apart. If you think you might want to bump the power up in the future (N2O, etc) then you might want to replace the rods while you have the motor apart. If you are pretty sure you will be content with the blower, then you don't need anything else.

Good luck with your project.

I've been talking to Jeff over at importbuilders and here's the quotes he gave me, what do you think?

JE 9.5:1 pistons 84.5mm in size 9:1 is $535 shipped/

Eagle Rods $355 shipped./

Golden Eagle Iron Sleeves NEVER use them. EVER. RS Machines,
including the boring, honing, tanking, and decking, $900.

Yeah, the Stage 3 is the maximum streetable limit, but Clutchmasters says that the Stage 3 is for heavy nitrous or heavy boost aps. I might consider a Stage 2 just for the fact that it might be a little better to your 9psi limit. Try the ACT Stage 2. ACT is a little more grippy than CM.

I'm amazed you didn't ask thjis in the supercharger forum of this board as you would have gotton a lot of more responses. Now that I got that out of the way...

I think your project is way overkill for 9psi of JRSC boost. I've seen stock bottom ends on 11psi of boost. I don't see why you are choosing the JRSC for a project car??? I don't have a problem with it cause I have one myself... but after around 9-11psi, the blower is not very efficient anymore.

Plus you should not have been in so much of a hurry to buy parts yet. Especially that DC 4-1 header. That is a POS header for a JRSC application. I got one and its one of the things that contributes to my boost registering more than its suppost to. Thats not good because that meas your system is not as efficent as it should be. If anything you want less boost while at the same power levels. This means you will have a better flow compared to the other way around.

For a JRSC and 9psi of boost, I would just get my head done. Do as much as you can on the head to get more flow out of it.

The CM stage 3 clutch is good for street driving I hear and I was suppost to order that very clutch, but didn't to financial reasons. I'm getting the Exedy Organic clutch instead for about half the price.

ACT does not have stages btw. They allow you to customize the right clutch kit for your desires. You can select the pressure plate (heavy duty, extreme, etc) clutch (street, 6-puck, 4-puck, ect) to suit your needs.

That list is kinda overkill IMO.
