Power steering question

My power steering is so loose i hate it. Is there a way to tone it down a notch, or has anyone taken it out completly? My friends civic doesnt have ps and i like the way it drives a lot. beside being able to bust a u turn easy are there any pros or cons of not having ps?

You can take it out completely, or just take the belt off. The only downside is that its harder to turn the wheel at low speeds. A lot of guys take it out to save weight.

IMO, the luxury is worth more than the 10lbs im saving.

If you take the belt off, you're still pushing around the fluid in a sealed system, which makes it even harder. You can loop the system and add a breather so that you can avoid this problem. Due to the quicker steering ratio and probably fatter tires it will be tougher than your friend's Civic was, but not by a lot.

Pros: +3-4whp, -17lbs off the front wheels, MUCH better steering feel (can feel the road surface and the tires breaking away far better), cleaner engine bay.

Cons: Pain in the ass to parallel park and maneuver at slow speeds.

For me it was well worth it, I love no P/S. Not something I'd do with a BMW M5, but I'm very glad I did with mine. I was a little hesitant about it, and during my first drive without it I was like "uh oh, maybe I made a big mistake!" But I got used to it and grew to love it after a week. Since you've driven a non-P/S car and like it and you don't like your P/S, I'm sure you'll love your car without.

is there a diy guide to taking off the whole system? I only have to loop it if i only take off the belt right? I want my engine bay clean and spacious so anything to do with the power steering i want to be gone.

You loop the system and add a breather to reduce effort whether you are taking off the belt or the whole thing... I don't know why you wouldn't take out the whole thing if you're not going to have P/S on a permanent basis. I don't know of a DIY but IIRC the directions on the loop/breather kit I got were pretty easy to follow.
