If you take the belt off, you're still pushing around the fluid in a sealed system, which makes it even harder. You can loop the system and add a breather so that you can avoid this problem. Due to the quicker steering ratio and probably fatter tires it will be tougher than your friend's Civic was, but not by a lot.
Pros: +3-4whp, -17lbs off the front wheels, MUCH better steering feel (can feel the road surface and the tires breaking away far better), cleaner engine bay.
Cons: Pain in the ass to parallel park and maneuver at slow speeds.
For me it was well worth it, I love no P/S. Not something I'd do with a BMW M5, but I'm very glad I did with mine. I was a little hesitant about it, and during my first drive without it I was like "uh oh, maybe I made a big mistake!" But I got used to it and grew to love it after a week. Since you've driven a non-P/S car and like it and you don't like your P/S, I'm sure you'll love your car without.
