problems with air conditionar

ok i have a 96 integra LS and im having problems with my AC. and was wondering if i can get some inputs below is a list of whats happeneing. this is all when my AC is on

- AC is not cold at all (put added free on) still not cold
- engine bay makes a knocking noise and feels like the car is going to stall, but it doesnt
- while driving, about every 15-20 secs i hear the knock and my car lags a bit, then anohter knock and it goes back to normal

this does NOT happen when my AC is not on. any suggestions?

hmmm thats weird
i would say if u added freon and its still not cold then u must have a leak somewhere n ur a/c line. the laggin part, well ur engine works harder when ur a/c is on but im not sure on how much it lags on ur engine.

You don't need the AC anyways! Take it out!

this never happened before. i just started expiernecing this problems recently. and you can feel the lag when the ac is on, like i said, it knocks then there is a power loss, then knocks again and you can feel it go to normal. it like almost mashing on the gas then letting go and mashing on the gas.

also, if im at idle and it knocks, my idle drops down to about 200 rms

sounds kind of like the way my car was. did you just get work done on it? if so, go to your acura dealer and check the manual or ask how much ac fluid you need to have. my ac didnt get cold and clicked on and off repeatedly as well, and it turned out that my ac was overcharged (too much cooling compound - r194a (?))

the ac may also be undercharged, but that doesnt explain the bogging down of the system. remember, the fluid is pressurized in the system. that is why when you have too much fluid in there, the engine bogs down. also, after you get your charge fixed, rev the engine with the ac on full blast to about 6000 rpm and see if it squeals after you let off the gas. squealing means your a/c clutch was damaged by the extra charge (if that is the case) and you should petition the ac shop to pay in full for the replacement and for whatever cost was to fix the coolant charge. good luck..

You have a leak in your AC system. The kicking on and off means there is no freon in the system, and it cycles on and off to build up pressure. Take your car to a reputable shop and have them check out your ride. The loss of power comes from the AC being on, and you gain power back when it shuts itself down.

a/c condenser leak?

hey, i just came across this problem too. i got a 3rd gen. since my front bumper is cut open...i guess a big rock hit the front a/c condenser and there is now a small crack, which is leaking. so all my Free-on leAAaaked out.
yup. it cost $100 for a new a/c condenser..looks like radiator..
its right in front of the radiator.

sounds to me like ur fluid levels arent right or u need a new compressor. or maybe the condendser like others said. My a/c takes awhile to get cold on my 91 GS so i checked the levels and they are right around 45PSI. where thery should be.

easiest solution

check ur ac compressor if its working , check the tension of the ac belt make sure it is not too loose and not too tight. check ur ac fluids if its in specified level...oh yeah b4 u do all these steps...make sure ALL UR FAN CONDENSOR/AC CONDENSOR FUSES are not busted if so change them and do the above steps as follows if they are all OK....check ur ac switches if its ok, FINAL thing to do to resolve ur probs is this GET UR FREAKIN WRENCHES TOOLS OR WHATEVER U WANNA USE TO TAKE OFF THAT STUPID AC COMPRESSOR. WHY THE HELL DO U NEED IT FOR..ITS NOT LIKE U LIVE IT A DESSERT FOR YOU TO USE THAT AC ANYWAYS. BETTER YET. GO TO FRY'S ELECTRONICS,CIRCUIT CITY, BEST BUY AND BUY URSELF A PORTABLE AIR COOLER THAT USES WATER. OR IF UR KINDA BROKE....GET A ZIPLOCK BAGS PUT SOME WATER PUT THEM INTO UR FREEZER TILL IT TURN TO ICE AND TAKE IT WITH YOU WHENEVER U DRIVE UR CAR. AC ARE FOR PRETTY BOYS , IF UR A RACER NO NEED FOR AC ITS TAKING WEIGHT AND SPACE .OR JUST PUT A REGULAR ROOM AC ON THE TRUNK. BUY AN AC/DC CONVERTER TO PLUG INTO UR CIG LIGHTER. AND I HOPE U FREEZE UR WHINNY ASS TO DEATH.

I'm with him. Chronic don't cause me any problems with your lame bull shit. As for your AC, I start AC in class on Monday, but I have a general idea of how its supposed to work, but all the stuff your saying is making little or no sense about the clunking etc. Basically if you paid to have the system recharged with 134a and its still not cold you either have a leak or a compressor problem or it could be any number of things, have the dealership check the system for leaks with an ultrasonic leak detector, if there is a leak it will be found. BTW so you know there is a hefty fine for servicing your own A/C unit especially if you're letting out refrigerant into the air. Basically if you're that worried about your A/C take it to a dealership, or simply pull it all out.

Id take it in and have the a/c ckd just because its not getting cold dosent mean its loosing charge. your compressor may be working, you may have a floien object that has caused a clog, smashed a/c lines ect. these will all cause it to cycle constantly.

also you need to have the pressures tested, to much freon or r134, which ever you use can also make it not get cold, i see you added some already.

the clunking sound may be the clutch on the compressor (pulley is clutched) this can cause a large loss of power. or just your compressor going bad.
