my first post! i found this site trying to research exhaust systems and what not.. my question is removing my cat and gaining hp?
i have a 92 acura integra ls.. i've added a cold air intake and im now looking into removing my cat and changing my muffler. my second question is.. i want the perfect sound.. if i remove my cat shud i get a "street tuned" muffler or the all out "race" muffler with no restrictions.. i want it to be loud but not LOUD!!!..
thanks.
get a carsound high flow cat, be good to your enviornment. and a race exaust will do you no good without lots of ponies in the engine bay. if your trying to get a few hp out of a stock engine, get a nice SS exaust, 2.25 inches in diameter.
but you really need to know what you want to do with your car in the long run in order to make a good choice in any aftermarket parts you want to use.
my 02 cents

yeah you definitely dont want to just remove the cat and get a fart can.
get a good exhaust, i have a skunk2 2.5" exhaust with a resonator in place of my cat and it's loud but that's how i like it and i'm not disappointed. other good companies are thermal R&D, invidia, greddy, apex'i, those are just a few. or you could get someone in your area who can do quality work to make you a custom exhaust.

yah, i have the thermal R&D, its lifetime guarantee'd, unlike my stupid apexi N1 that rusted out on me.
havent installed my carsound cat yet, i think i might wait till i install my turbo, just incase the flanges dont meet up exactly, then i can use my cat as a buffer since i have to install extra pipe and flanges on that anyway.

I have a Magnaflow High flow cat. They are made my Carsound so its a good quality. No CEL so its working right, Its a universal 2.25 inch with custom 2.25 inch piping out to a Fireball style muffler. Its cool sounding but louder than I wanted. Im not changing anything about it. Very happy. Id say I spent maybe $150 total.

any suggestions on how big the pipe should be? 2 inches is fine correct?
The stock pipe is 2 inches so you won't be gaining anything. Go with anything between 2.25 and 2.5 inches, depending on how much horsepower you're going for. Most aftermarket exhausts are 2.36" which is ideal.
I have a megan header, magnaflow cat, and a GReddy evo2 cat back it sounds awesome. I also have some engine work, that always helps the sound.
Just what ever you do, dont be a rice boy and get an auto zone $50 fart can.

Poor mans exhaust :-P
Hell, the cats go bad anyways, they can last what..2-3 years, depending on driving conditions. All I did was unbolt my cat, grabed a hammer and some rebar, and banged the ceramic out. I was able to notice a differance from the mid to high rpm range and it didnt cost me a dime. Other than that everything is stock, and it doesnt sound like beans in a can. I guess it will do until i save up some $$.I know its bad for the environment, but at least im not driving a ford :-P
