tech wrench rpm gauge is jumping

One day I was coming home from school and all of a sudden my rpm gauge starts flying to 8000 and then back to 4000. It was doing this the whole time, it was fluctuating all over the place.
The next day I strted my car and it just bogged out, I couldnt really drive it for a mile because it stalled repeatedly. If someone knows what could be causing this I would greatly appreciate it.

Sounds like some distributor problems.... Corrosion most likely , if your mechanically inclined I think its as simple as just brushing off the built up deposits on the metal.....

Also how long has it been since you replaced your cap , rotor , wires and spark plugs.

If your due I would do that as well. Also if you cant do this , I think at honda they were doing it for like 60 or so on a car.

if the tach jumps when at idle the problem is a vaccumm leak. check throttle body bypass valve (located close to the throttle body, the casing is black.

There no need to check this , hes showing classic signs of distributor problems (corrosion). THE stalling is the dead give away. Basically your barely getting any spark. Which it will , die , be hard to start..... Fluctuating rpm guage when you step on it.....

Youll notice much better power once you fix this as well. Let us know how things go once you get this fixed / looked into.

-- Also let me guess your car was just around some a lot of rain , or snow. Is your car stored inside and not driven a lot?

yep mike is right, the 4 wires in the distributor are either loose or corroded or both, simple remove 1 wire at a time, clean the corrosion lightly take a pair of pliers and crimp the connector a little, then take a little dielectric grease and push the connection back on and your prob should go away.

You did the right thing by getting some new stuff , dont know if you needed it but this will help overall when you get things fixed.

Your going to have to take it to honda or do it yourself. Check out nov's post.

are you getting a check engine light or not? usually the TDC or CYP sensor in the distributer get messed up and you can't just buy a new sensor you have to buy a whole new distributer

Those integras are really bad about distributors, we replaced a ton of them at work. They all came in as "no-starts".

My tach was doing the same thing, but my car was also misfiring. Maybe its my Ignitor or distributor also. You guys gave me something to think about.

I replaced the distributor and everything is working fine....i'm running lean, so i purchased a fuel regulator and a V-AFC, which will hopefully correct that problem...but a new one arises....how to tune the V-AFC?

btw, if you guys need distributors, i suggest you go to junkyards, coz i was making calls everywhere for good prices, from $300 at brand name stores, to just below $100 at junkyards for the same type...

thanks for the help guys
