Some non-newbie exhaust questions...

Ok, I have three questions:

1. For those of you that have chosen to make your own exhaust setup, what's the longest actual muffler that you could fit under the stock location ('96 GS-R)? I'm looking at a 14" and 18" inch muffler, and would like to use the longer one, as it should be quieter.

2. As ricey as they are, has anyone used a big resonator tip on their muffler, and possibly knows about how much it reduced sound level compared to the muffler alone?............I'm talking about the resonating tips with perforations and packing material, not just a big, ineffective coffee can. Ex:

3. Has anyone with a turbo setup or other used an exhaust sealant (Wurth, 3M, or something else) to fix an exhaust leak? What kind of results? I can't get to all the bolts on my downpipe flange to turbine housing connection, so I'm wondering if the stuff will last on a part that close to the engine.

Thanks,
Nick

xdannyx25 will become famous soon enoughxdannyx25 will become famous soon enough
1- overall 14 in
2- welding a tip on your muffler will make it loud
3- as long as the sealant is made for taking a good amount of heat and is made for it
fin da store that has bolts that match the specifications of the others
you can ask homedepot to help you out, they can tell you stores to go to.............

14? Cool, thanks.

The tip will make it quieter, though....... I had a non-resonating tip on my first Probe, and comparing it to just the muffler without the tip, the tip made it MUCH smoother and more mellow.

I'm just curious about a tip that's actually made to be a resonator, with glass packing and a perforated core.

Thanks,
Nick

I had an exhaust leak at that gasket on my 88' supra turbo. I was able to get at all the bolts (with a huge deal of difficulty). I used some <insert brand here> high heat sealant on both sides of the Toyota steel gasket. Fixed it right up... never had a problem after that.

But, what you're saying is, you can't get to a bolt(s)... So what do you want to do? Just squeeze the gunk into the crack (without changing the gasket) and hope it holds? There's no way that alone will fix it; it'll be blown out within a week. If I were you, I'd break out the extensions and wobble bars, and try a little harder at getting those bolts.

Well, I can only get to 4 of the 5 bolts on the turbine flange, because the downpipe (from Drag kit, I think) is made in such a way to where a bolt is put in one of the holes before the flange is welded to the pipe, and thus with the gasket I have, the bolt is not long enough to reach......

So yes, I can get to all the bolts that are in there right now, but I was wondering if this sealant would be enough to seal what that 5th bolt can not completely get on its own....

Thanks for the reply,
Nick
