My car is now at 88,855 miles and acording to what I've heard its time to replace the Timming belt.
How difficult is this procedure?
should it be done by a professional shop or is it something that can be easily done?
if so what parts and tools would I need?

Also since you are changing your timing belt you might as well change your water pump, its not that much more and you kill 2 birds with one stone.
i agree.
But it woudl also be smart to replace all your drive belts (a/c, ps and alt belt) too sinceyou gotta take 'em off anyway. just put new ones on.
I would say if you were questioning your ability to do it enough to post this question you should probably leave it to a shop unless you know someone who would help/supervise you doing it...That is the BEST way to learn.
if you have a helms or a howto and a free day, why not do it yourself... learning is a wonderful thing. You'll feel real good after you do it I think. It's one of those obstacles that I'm trying to get over too...
