what happens when your pilot bearing dies?

my cluth's pilot bearing is dieing. I can hear it when the clutch pedel is not depressed. When I push in the clutch, the noise goes away. So heres mny 2 part question:
1: is the pilot bearing spinning when the car is in gear and driving? (trying to estimate how long I can make it last)

2: if it does sieze or whatever, what will happen? Will the trans get messed up, or will I just not be able to shift and have to tow it home?
I'm tryin to put it off for awhile till I get some $$ and time together. Its been like this for about 2 months. I assume its about to blow and I have let it go too long but too bad, I have no choice. I'm gonna try to replace the clutch and bearing in 2 weeks.
thx guys

I dont know much about how the system is put together and how it runs, but if you can hear it when its in gear, that means that the bearing it going thru some sort of painful experience while in gear, hence the noise.. My guess, and its only a guess would be that yes, the bearing is taking dmg while in gear... Replacing the clutch is never a cheap or easy task, but sometimes, you have to bite the bullet and spend the money.. Personally, I would do it much sooner than later... On an obvious note, try not to drive the car til it gets fixed, though with the way the weather has been going, that could be more of an inconvience than normally...
