What oil for >100,000 miles?

Reading the oil weight post makes me think that I too should use 5w-30 in my car. But I have 170,000 mile Integra engine. What should I use then? 10W-100? or 5W-30. since anything higher is a "waste".

Totally depending on the condition of your motor and frequency of changes, the weather conditions you encounter and exactly how you drive and what you use your car for.

5W30 may be the best bet for colder and or all season use and a heavier weight for summer say, 10W40. Synthetic wouldn't hurt either, the new Mobil-1 would fit the bill.

Reread the post and see where it talks about viscosity.

You also may want to do a compression and or leakdown test to see how your high mileage motor is holding up. If the compression numbers are hopefully good then I'd stick with what has worked so far 5W30.

Of course you can change oil often enought like me to swap in different weights for different parts of the season.

Good luck,

A.

PS just remember that changing oils and weights is NOT a cure for failing motor internals or to increase HP output. Rather, It is to Protect said motor currently and in the future.

This is something i've also been considering as of late. I have used both 5w-30 and 10w-30, but i kno that the 10 is recommendded for higher mileage cars and the manual states that either is good, but 5 is preferred... so wassup wit dat????

Secondly, if i do get a compression test done on my car by a friend or watever, and the compression isn't up to par... what problem is that indicative of? solutions?

Or does everyone suggest i just go start another thread?

I live in SoCal, change the oil every 2000 to 2500 miles and use the heavier 10W-40, because I think the lighter one would just wear out much faster since the engine has around 170,000miles.
But then again, people are suggesting to use the lighter one instead. no clear cut answer I guess.

1greyteg: since we're on the topic of oil for high milege motors, whats your take on those "high milege" oils. like castro's high milege oil and valvoline maxlife, and the various other brands like quaker state. are they any different then regular oil, or do they actually help out like they advertise themselves that they do. i'll considering using the "high milege" oils if they do help out, but if they don't really do much at all, i'll stick with just the regular oil.
