All the different Bitmap files! What do they mean?

When I scan an image (HP ScanJet 3300C / Win 98 2nd Edition) I have several options which I can save the image as.
What is the difference between:

Bitmap File (*.bmp)
GIF Bitmap File (*.gif)
JPEG Bitmap File (*.jpg)
FlashPix Bitmap File (*.fpx)
PCX Bitmap File (*.pcx)
PNG Bitmap File (*.png)
TIFF File (*.tif)
TIFF Compressed (*.tif)
Windows Metafile (*.wmf)

Thanks!

Theyre not Bitmap files theyre just diffrent image files types. Some are smaller others are abel to hold transparencies and other are just least detailed. Jpeg is the most common.

They are bitmap files just different compression schemes/formats.

JPG is the most common but if you compress it too much (i.e. pick a lower quality) the image will become messed up and blocky.
