Apple?
So yeah does anyone know how the speed of an Apple G4 Powerbook 1.55ghz will compare to my 3.06ghz laptop? Recentley my comp has been being a bitch. And Im getting tired of it and thinking about going to Apple. Alot of kids at my school use Apple since they are music production majors or video production majors and they dont seem to haev the problems that I have. But can someone tell me how my comp will stack up. I know that apple uses a diffrent benchmark than other companies.
Here are my comps specs 3.06 processer well it really runs closer to 2.0 becasue it gets to hot. 512 ddr sdram. 40gig hard drive, 10,100,1000 eithernet, wireless g, XP Pro, Ati 9800 128bit/

You cant compare apples to PC's by spead but rather by what programs you are using. There are certain progs it will kill a pc and certain progs it won't hang.

Ahh ok. So how about Photoshop, I-tunes, Word, random video games, firefox, streaming media, aim type programs, audio editing software?
Where is the apple faster where is it slower?

Everything except Games. Games won't run good on a Mac, but you can build a 600 dollar PC to play games on. Everything else the Mac will just OWN!

however Ask Vadah, Cap (BB6 b.k.a Austin)...or myself...
do we care about games?
not really
however games run pretty sweet on our G5s though
and you will get good gameplay on that PowerBook...but yeah...

So do yall see them coming out with another powerbook soon that would be better than the current 1.5 15.2 inch? I have heard that tiger will be coming out soon is that worth waiting for or will they have like a cheap upgrade option since they have been coming out wiht a new os every year or so now? I have heard that they wont put the G5 chip in the laptop for a good while now because they cant keep it cool enough. But I have heard roomers taht they might but dual 1.5 processors in it is this true? And the Powerbook is good for Photos and Photoshop right?

I used to have a powerbook G4 400 and for normal everyday stuff like internet, itunes and word processing stuff it rocked. I would say that the G4 speed is misleading cause you can't compare mac Mhz with Pc Mhz. Apple might not have the fastest overall speed but their chips are faster than pc's running at the same speed for sure. I believe that they are more efficient. I heard somewhere that you can muliply the mac Mhz by like 1.5 and you get the PC speed.
I have a pc now and I am thinking I should have just ponied up the cash and got a mac. I don't have anything against pcs though.

i had a 1.25ghz powerbook, 15.1", that my brother bought off me. he says it's way faster than his dual 800 g4 powermac. i now have a g5 dual 2.5. fast as hell too. video encoding for 90 minute movie went from over 3 hours to about an hour. all the comparisons between my computer and dell's fastest dual xeon systems have been landslides in favor of my mac, especially photoshop and the like. everything i had done on a pc, i'm doing on a mac, only more stable/reliable. i sold all my windows pc's, except my trusty 7 year old gateway, because windows was running so bad for me. if you want to get a good deal, check out apple's store webpage. look on the bottom right for a red tag that says "save". you can get some great deals on laptops or desktops or ipods. i'm on my 3rd mac and there's been 5 in my family over the last 5 years.

Macs own PC's in everything... as long as you can get the program for it to own at. If your into games, your looking at around 3months for pc games to finally come out on mac. If you want a computer that dosnt crash then the mac is for you, but they dont come cheap compared to custom built pc's. I would love one but i just cant afford it, that and im pretty profecient in Premiere and hate FinalCut, i used macs for video editing in school and i didnt like them. Everyone says they own for video editing but i found longer rendering times and overall lag on a Dual G4 mac compared with a matrox pc which was cheaper. Never tried photoshop on a mac so maybe thats where they shine. Dont get me wrong, i would love a computer that didnt crash and wasnt in anyway related to bill gates, but their are cons, i.e, lack of programs.

Don't let them fool you, Mac apps crash all the time too... They just do it more gracefully (this is based on the fact it runs over a flavor of Unix code set) Unix in itself is pretty clunky but I have to admit that OSX is a good pairing with it.
You can't really compare mhz to mhz when you have two differetn types of architecture of chips. I'll just say that you need to look athte applications and find the ones you are going to use and the choose based on that. Make an informed decision on what you are going to do with it and not what other people do with theirs.

I don't think any computer will be completely crash free...the difference that I have noticed is that when an apple program crashes it doesn't kill the computer. You don't have to re-start the computer like you do in windows. OS X works that way (they designed it to do that)
For its defense Win XP is pretty good. Its much more stable than previous versions.

My second comp was a dell 2.5ghz with xp.
It was an incredible improvement from 98se. XP is a pretty decent os.
OSX is way better/stable. And plus just the way mac's runs, and the programs are just top notch. If you just surf the web and do minor photo stuff there is no real need to spend the extra dough on a mac. But if you desire more and or will in the future, a mac is def the way to go.
Video, Film, Photography, Graphics Design, Music, plus a whole lot of other stuff is just soooo great on macs. The programs are just sooo great, and the stability, ease of use, power, ect. is just amazing on macintosh's. I myself still have both, but honestly i only now use the pc for cd burning(less wear on my mac's cd drive), that's it.

you cant compare AMD to Intelm let alone apples to PCs like that. it's not 1MHz = 1MHz. theyre different architectures, different instruction sets & chipsets.
that's why intel has abandoned their MHz badging in favor of a BMW like number scheme. the smaller the silicon gets the hotter it runs (theoretically, AMD has usurped this w/ the winchester by actually running cooler).
G4s are still weak compared to newer P4s and Athlon64s. but the G5s have some muscle, especially when in a dual set up; that's where they really shine.
as far as (Photoshop, I-tunes, Word, random video games, firefox, streaming media, aim type programs, audio editing software?)
the only things you'd see a difference in would be photoshop and audio editing (unless the streaming media your talking about is going to be streamed from your computer as a high volume server) Athlon64>P4>G4 in photoshop, P4>Athlon64>G4 in audio editing
G5>* in audio & video editing (barring the Power5 and company)
