apple 54 laptop questions

right now ive got a pc and ive been thinking of going to a apple computer,, the new G5 im told is the fastest on the market, but im thiking also about there laptops which have the g4

and thoughts on there products,

also at bestbuy the guy did not know anything about apple so i could not get a conflicting option and when i mentioned apple he wanted nothing to do with me he was a complete ass hole..

he also told me with a laptop i would have the replace the battery once a year and that cost over $200 thats why if i got one of there computers i should get the service plan so it will replace that for free, is this true

lol! once a year. what a douchebag. if you take care of your bat, it will last 5 years np. If you want a apple laptop check out the new G4 iBooks, they're alot more inexpensive. If you can get the educator/student discount and can afford it the new 15" is really nice. beautiful screen too. $1,999.00 w/out student discount $1,799.00 with.

The G5 Powerbooks will be coming out next year sometime so if you really want a notebook and can wait i'd say do that. if not go for the G4 iBook, then you can sell it on eBay for a minimal loss (apples hold their value good {for a computer}) and upgrade.

if you dont really care if you get a laptop check out the iMacs, they're a bettter value. The only G5 i'd reccomend would be the Dual Processor ones which start at $2,299.00 w/educational discount $2,499.00 without. an AppleCare Protection Plan (added 3 year warranty ) will run you another $199 on top.

the iMac which comes w/flat panel built in you can get for $1,199.00 or $1,299.00 w/ no discount (plus $169 for applecare). if you plan on gaming on it the G4 powerbooks have a ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 which is good. the iMacs are pretty weak for gaming, but decent for video/audio editing.

w/ an educational discount you can get a 12" G4 iBook for $949.00 or a 14" $1,199.00 + $183 applecare.

The 12" powerbooks are essentially more beefed up iBooks. If your going for a powerbook spend the extra $ to get a 15".

in summary. G4 iBook = best mac value for laptop.l iMac = best mac value for desktop. you can game on these but they wont run 3D games at high frame rates.

G5; dont buy unless you get a Dual processor, otherwise it's not nearly as fast. they will also be updated early next year, you may be able to get the older dual 1.8Ghz at discount
Power Mac revisions destined for Macworld introduction

Powerbooks; will be new w/ G5 next year when G5 desktops move to 90nm.

dunno about macs but some of the pc notebooks we sell at best buy (i'm leaving on saturday for bigger and better things) eat batteries like a motherfucker. the idea behind the service plan is that you don't have to replace a battery at all within the 4 years it covers you. but honestly it protects against shit you can't control happening. like if you leave your computer in a car and it sits in direct sunlight and oops... the screen's fried, hp, compaq or sony will say tough shit. BestBuy replaces it without any questions. the battery thing is nice because they are expensive... but honestly they will last more than a year... more like a year and a half. wearing them out in a year is using it every day charging the battery to full and depleting it fully. not many people do that.

i worked at the bestbuy near fashion square part time last year, the job is ok but the entire no commission thing is a joke, were there to sell, and i hate how they come by and talk to you about your numbers.

the service plan is a $299. dollar joke

Apple = overprice pretty looking pieces of trash.

For the money of a 15 super drive power g4, you can get a 1.7 centrino area-51 which will absolutely decimate the apple in performance and mobiliity.

Btw, did you know that the dual 2.0 g5 got molested by the AMD 64 fx and even more so by Intel 3.2 P4ee

it made my job easier. i personally hate sales all together. working at best buy made me realize that. i can do sales... but i'd prefer not to. and i can't honestly blame a company for trying. i've walked into a circuit city 3 times since i worked at best buy, hardly anyone was willing to help and when they did help they were telling me a bunch of bullshit to try and get me to buy something so they could get the commission.
thus is why after i quit best buy on saturday i'll be doing most of my purchases at newegg.

no just get whoever can get the discount to buy it and then you just send in the registration and warranty. no biggie.

Apple laptops are more secure then PC laptops. Alot of the DOD runs OSX. there are some security holes but they are nil compated to MS's problems and apple patches them quick.

The G5 DUAL processor will be great for 3d gaming. The Powerbooks will be pretty good, the Radeon 9600 helps ALOT. The G4 is relatively old tech compared to the Pent.-M (centrino is just the marketing buzz name they use to sell their own wifi w/ it) but apple did recently change out the G4 for the newer 7457 G4 doubling the L2 cache. The G5 portable will be the Sh!. liquid cooling, process devouring monster. 60nm SOI+ tech. IBM's new fishkill fab is going to be making apples alot faster then they used to be. There are less games for apple then PCs keep that in mind. Apples are very good for digital imaging, video, audio, etc..

what do you mean wireless internet? like GSM, CDMA, such. Your cable service will be alot faster, unless you live in certain areas like San Diego, DC, you have to check with your provider to see ifyou can get wireless broadband. it'll be alot more $ too. verizon is something like 80 bux/mo plus 25cents a min.

if you just talking about wifi when your at or around home just buy a Airport http://www.apple.com/airport/ and hook it up to your router conxin.

a year and a half? good gawd what are those people doing to their computers. should last longer then that. I'd say go with Apples warranty, they'll replace the puter if they cant fix it, plus if you need help with your OS or proggies apple will be able to help you alot more then best buy.

and listen to 5gen Dont leave your puter baking in the sun for hours BAD idea.

molesting chips getting molested? wtf bro. the Vir Tech G5 supercluster was ranked the 3rd fastest supercomputer behind japan's earth simulator and LANL ASCI Q. It has recently even toped that at 17.6 Tflops. (2nd fastest is at 13.88)

now 17.5 Tflops

you talk alot of smack, apple and PCs are not comparable solely on benchmarks. as for trash wtf are you talking about, they've got very good build quality, barring a few cracked batteries w/ early ibooks, a couple noisy PSUs in early G4 PowerMacs, and an occasional bad ibook logic board.

how does a area-51 "decimate" a powerbook in mobility? btw i think your talking about the 51 sentia, the 51 uses P4s and weights 7.5lbs w/out a battery. the starting price for a 51 sentia 1.7 = nearly 3 grand.

14.1" screen
Dimensions (H) x (W) x (D) : 1.5"x12"x10.6"
Weight: 4.9lbs. w/o Battery
they dont list the w/battery weight

Size and weight (15-inch models)

* Height: 1.1 inches (2.8 cm)
* Width: 13.7 inches (34.8 cm)
* Depth: 9.5 inches (24.1 cm)
* Weight: 5.6 pounds (2.5 kg) with battery and optical drive installed (9)

or for super mobility the 12"

Size and weight (12-inch model)

* Height: 1.18 inches (3.0 cm)
* Width: 10.9 inches (27.7 cm)
* Depth: 8.6 inches (21.9 cm)
* Weight: 4.6 pounds (2.1 kg) with battery and optical drive installed (9)

yes i know... but my point is. if you have best buy's service plan and you do that... you're covered.
oh and the batteries... i've seen them wear out faster. some people drain the batteries all the way down, re-charge them and drain them all the way down again twice daily.

Batteries on laptops last you no more then 3 hours.... (Except centrino based laptops) Well all I got to say is ppl that don’t get the warranty are complete idiots in my opinion lol... ok would u want to pay 249 for a warranty that will cover you for everything except intentional damage or have a warranty from manufacturer that will only cover "manufacturer defects?" Don’t people get it?? MANUFACTURE DOES NOT COVER JACK SHYT LOL I can't stress it enough.. So don’t be cheap and get the warranty and save yourself the trouble... with it you will be secured trust me.

what do you mean? i doubt the best buy proection plan covers complete negligence. otherwise everyone would bake their laptops in the sun, for example, towards the end of it and get a brand new laptop.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....equestid=81279

"How does a Product Replacement Plan (PRP) work?

Other benefits are:

Security

No Service Needed
This plan frees you from parts delays and waiting in long lines. We give you a voucher so you can choose your own product replacement.

Full Replacement
You get comprehensive coverage, with no deductibles or other hidden charges. If your product is found defective under normal usage, we will provide a replacement.

Nationwide Redemption
We can redeem the product in any of our stores nationwide. Simply contact us toll-free at 1-888-BEST BUY (237-8289) to arrange for your replacement.

24-7-365
For your convenience, you can reach our service representatives anytime day or night."

the applecare plan does the same thing, if under normal usage, something goes wrong they try to repair it, (which is a good thing imo, no one wants to lose all their data), if they cant then they replace it with a new puter. it's also cheaper then $249, covers all software issues, has 24 hr phone support, and extends the warranty to all apple wifi cards, base stations, memory upgrades etc.. for 3 years.
