Bad HDD?

My roommate has a Compaq Evo N800v. One day he went to boot it and it said "Boot read disk error. Press ctrl alt del to restart"

I reinstalled xp pro and everything worked fine, now(about 8 hours later) he went to boot it and it is slower than piss, it takes about 5 mins to boot up, and just opening avg takes about 3 mins.

In BIOS there are two HDD self tests. Quick and Comprehensive. Quick gives an error and comprehensive says everything is ok.

sounds like the hdd is dying. Try to get into windows and run scandisk

i can't find scandisk, but i got in the performance monitor and avg. disk queue length keeps spiking 100

also things like min and maximizing windows works just fine, but everything else takes forever

its a toshiba hdd

could it be that i formatted it wrong?

i went with NFTS instead of FAT32

no NTFS is what you need for xp. id say bad hdd
