no it's not bad. Do you have a surge protector? I suggest you invest in one.

Get a surge protector with modem/phone jack support. I've
had three modems "blow" during thunderstorms. Or just
make sure you "unplug" the connection when you hear
thunder.

Not only is a surge bad for your CPU, it is bad for the whole motherboard.

Surge protectors do nothing, what you need is a battery back-up.

Yes, they protect against SMALL surges. Now if lightning strikes and it somehow comes through your outlet, no surge protector is gonna do shit to stop it.

i work in a building with REAL bad surges, about once a month the electricity will go out, and every once in a long while.. one of the 30 machines will have a fried part or have corrupted something... but not often

Suges will help. They dont when u ddont get a good one or you get one that is to gh for the application u r using it with. Make usre u calcualte the amps to the exact tee, otherwise the surge lets it through and thinks nothing of it. same goes for a UPS, you just cant buy anyone u need one to suite u r application. UPS are good since u still have time to run on a battery.
