which is better AGP or PCI Express? plus which 256 card is good?

Somebody told me that PCI Express technology is much better now and its more faster??

the reason i ask is i have been checking out the ATI X800 XL.

I am looking at a good 256mb card to run BF2 at full graphics, including FS2004. any suggestions? my specs

ABIT NF7-S V2.0 mobo
AMD Athlon XP 3000+ Barton 400mhz
Corsair XMS extreme 2x512mb (1gb) PC3200CL sticks running dual at 400
Antec 400w ps
i also have ATI Radeon 9500 Pro oc'ed to 9700 specs. with Zalman AGP cooling with fan.

my max budget probably will be 300 for now. I am not sure if i should wait until fall to get one since price might drop more.

well since you're just looking to upgrade in the $250 range stick w/ agp.

you can get a refurb x800xt platinum for $229 here
http://shop.ati.com/searchresults.asp?dept_id=39

it comes w/ a 3 year warranty straight from ATi.

here's the lowdown on PCI-e

-up until the 7800GTX there was no noticeable difference in performance between them

-PCI-e has more potential and is a better all around design than AGP, but if you already have an agp board there's no reason to jump to PCI-e now.

-the last AGP card from nVIDIA was the 6800 series. they will not be making another.

-the last AGP card from ATi will be the upcoming R520 "fudo". how much faster the PCI-e variant of it will be is yet to be seen.

-PCI-e cards are becoming cheaper than AGP cards steadily as AGP is phased out (minus the budget $100 cards).

-almost all new chipsets will be built around PCI-e

-current best chipset for gaming is nForce4 ULTRA. BFG makes a good version w/ all the goodies & lifetime warranty available through newegg.

shibby. i run the radeon x800 XL. u'll notice from benchmark tests the 256 is actually faster than the 512 version! doesnt make sense i know.....

but check a VERY REPUTABLE SITE:

www.tomshardware.com it has alot of hardware reviews and is one of the most reverred sites for reviewing comp hardware and software in the world (with bases all over the world and close ties with many of the big corporate companies).

i go to thissit all the time. u'll have an awesome comp. and yes u'll run those games well.....VERY well....mind u.....BF2 and counterstrike source all run using direct x 9....radeon is better and more built for runnin direct x games as opposed to nvidia which runs more Open GL. the VERY high end g-cards run all well but u know what i mean.

PCI-E isn't just some tech that is added to a gfx card to make it faster, it's the actual connection between the card and motherboard.

Shibby, your Abit NF7-S MB only has an AGP 8X slot, so you have to get a AGP gfx card.

I'm still running an old Abit SA7 with a P4 2.26 (oc'ed to about 2.7). I'm gonna milk this one out for maybe another year before building another.

Yeah, if you are running a Barton you will need AGP or Classic PCI for your socket A motherboard.

I am still happy with my AGP 9800XT - well it is really a 9800Pro that is actually built on 9800XT GPU & PCB.

I am sticking with my sys until I need to upgrade to 64 bit for OS compatibility. A lot of new stuff will probably come out before then.

My sys is steadily becoming OBSOLETE: until it doesn't do what I need it to I am good.

I have:
DFI NforceII Ultra B
Unlocked Barton 2500+ (the first batch of Bartons from AMD)
Antec EPS 550 Watt True Power
2 x 512MB 400Mhz Ultra Overclocking Memory (CL2 5ns)
9800XT that was sold as a Pro and then I overclocked back to XT settings
2 x 120 GB Seagate SATA 8MB setup with Raid0 on SIL3114
NEC 16x DVDRW

With refurbs it is all about luck. You don't know what happened to it before you got it. Just keep the mindset that you may have to eat shipping charges to get a RPL.

I bought a refurb so if I had problems modding it I could return it for replacement, and the blame could be placed on the previous owner. Funny thing is that the previous owner took off the heatsink and saw the GPU (I saw little marks on oem heatsink). I have no idea why they would have returned it unless they wanted a better model. The card overclocks great

Good luck. One thing: My Barton may be from April 2003, but it still is on par. I got my video card June 2004.

The main reason I will have to upgrade is due to 64 bit Operating Systems. I have a copy of Windws XP SP2 64 bit that I cannot use. I guess somewhere before or after Fall 2006 I will need a new MBD, CPU, and video card (Oh yeah - memory, too)

pci-express x16 is faster then agpx8, there is a reason why agpx8 is slowly being replaced.

turn up your AA & AF if you're running anything less than 1600x1200 on high detail. it's what the X800s do best.
