Burner problem

I recently upgraded my office computer to Win 2K prof from Win 98. I have an HP 9100 series Cd-writer Plus burner. When I'm lucky the burner will work properly. Sometimes the problems start when I hit the eject button on the burner. The light turns on and after a few seconds the computer will give me an error message stating that the drive was in use and I cannot eject it. Hmmm, but I wasn't using it, wtf??? So I close this message and try to eject it again and nothing happens. I went to my computer to see what's up and my cd drive is missing. :

At this point I restart my computer and if I'm lucky, the computer recognizes the drive and I can eject. If I'm not lucky the computer at start up would give me an error message that states the ATAPI for the Cd drive is incompatible. What I do then is shut the system down completely and try again. After shutting down, and restarting after a few seconds, the burner acts like nothing happened. :

Today when I came in to work, the computer booted normally with no errors, but when I needed to burn a cd, guess what? My cd drive disappeared without a trace. : Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem? Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you need to look for a better driver and ck all of your devices in BIOS and also take a look at you IDE connections and master and slave settings.
