yeah you need a bit more than that for a decent gaming PC.
Here's a budget gamer PC build:
COOLER MASTER RC-330-KKN1-GP Black SECC ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - $39
Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500 ATX12V 500W Power Supply - $65
GIGABYTE GA-965G-DS3 Socket T (LGA 775) Intel G965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard - $147
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86GHz LGA 775 Processor - $180
Memory...not sure...but about $130 for 1gb
SAPPHIRE 100189L Radeon X1900GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 (RoHS) CrossFire Video Card - $195
LG Black 16X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 10X DVD+R DL 16X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2M Cache E-IDE/ATAPI Super-Multi DVD Burner - $31
SAMSUNG Black 1.44MB 3.5" Internal Floppy Drive Windows 98SE/ ME/ 2000/ XP - $7
Western Digital Caviar RE WD1600YS 160GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - $65
Total = $859
And you still need keyboard/mouse/lcd monitor.

If you want to save more money and dont mind getting cheaper parts you can get a free mobo if you buy a cpu/mobo combo at frys. They have that E6300 cpu along with a cheap ECS mobo for about $180.
-$147
Also right now you can get the 7600GS for $59 AR $40 rebate or so at frys. Of course the x1900gt will smoke the 7600GS, but the 7600GS is a decent card for running most games. It really depends on what kind of games you play.
-$195
+$59
Who the heck use a floppy drive?
-$7
So it brings down the price to about $576

He might want a mobo that has some decent overclocking potential ...the DS3 is great...most e6300s get to about 3+ghz on stock voltage.
and yeah 59 dollars for a 7600GS is amazing! They aren't very good cards but for that price...wow.

This guy always gets the best setup for your dollar.

Also if your getting just the comp the price will be less. You can also play around with his suggestions and sacrifice in certain areas or go with other options etc.
But its always a good starting point and he just made these not too long ago they should be pretty current. Ive built a few computers and just got a friend to build the $1000 with a few upgrades they ended up getting like 1300 for everything , nice monitor and all.
Another idea is to mix and match from the high end and the low end. There monitor suggestion in the high end area is good.
