Yes.
but why not just leave it on? It doesn't waste that much electricity.

Because its not a good idea to leave them on constantly. For a few days is fine, but they will get hot and burn up, start getting slower, freeze more often, ect.... Something I learned from the computer programming professor at the tech.

Haha he's blowing smoke up your ass. They will not get hot and "burn" up. (if you've got stock cooling and are not overclocking it will stay a constant temp at idle). If it freezes it's probably a rouge app that has a memory leak or something else software related.
Shutting it down and starting it up wear out parts more than leaving it on for 6 hours at night. If you use it 3 hours a day all in a row...then turn it off and back on when you do use it. If you use it through out the day turn it on once in the morning, leave it on all day and turn it off at night. Turning it on and off multiple times durning the day is wearing and hard on moving parts like the hard drive and fans.
In my case my computer is always being used. If I'm not at it it's either rendering something or downloading something.
You really need to check this so called professors creditenals.
what tech place is it and who is he? I'll call him myself and chew him out for being a dumbass.

I only use my computer from 6-12ish every day but if i happen to go home for lunch or start if before work i leave it on ALL day. Rebooting your computer is actually good for some things however and i would suggest a simple restart
every few days if you do plan to leave it on 24/7

Thank you.
I have seen many computers just stop working because they were left on too long. They need to be shut down and restarted to reboot themselves. They DO need to cool down... is not just CPU that gets hot you know, anything that conducts electricity creates heat. The circuit boards themselves need to cool. Plus rebooting helps the computer stay on top of things. It re-configures, updates, and changes things during boot.

reboots are for squares. Usually reboot maybe once a week. electronics tend to reach a steady temperature pretty quickly. they're not going to be hotter in 3 days than 3 hours. Electronics are also most vulnerable when you first provide power. Light bulbs always blow when you turn them on, illustrating the fact that when power is first provided it spikes.

LCD panels work the opposite, burning out slowly at the edges first due to extended periods of heat. Most circuitry is well equipped to handle the small initial spike, especially in computers. I left mine on my entire 4 years of college and only ended up losing my hard drive in the 4th year due to bad sectors. Anyways as i said before your computer should be rebooted on a 1-2 day basis to keep performance at a maximum
I think one of the things you are failing to see is that over time a computer begins to corrupt its processes. If you notice on a fresh reboot your memory commit charge is at its lowest point, the longer the computer stays on the larger your commit charge will become, see for yourself. Now along with that larger commit charge and increase in process error ratios the processor and system components are forced to work harder over time. Thus they do actually slowly increase in temperature if they arent properly reset regularly.

Get some sort of timed switch device and mod it into your computer. Not too difficult but really not to easy either.
You can get a program called psshutdown to schedule reboots.

Question...
Why do you need it to turn on at a certain time?
Turn on your computer for a convenient time automatically
Go to your BIOS setup (press Del when your PC is loading usually).
Go to “Power Management Setup” and enable “ PWron/Resume by alarm” and set date alarm and time alarm and then press F10 to save your change (or whatever it is to save changes) and turn off your pc.
On specified date and time, your pc will turn on.

thank you AEgeus. Actually this may be dumb... but its gonna be my alarm clock cuz I cant wake up to normal BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP... I always wake up hrs after they go off and find them thrown across the room...
... maybe I should get one of those new alarm clocks I read about that have motorized wheels and move around then room so you hafta get up and find it when it goes off.... but that would prolly piss me off even more....
this is just one reason tho, I have more than just needing an alarm clock.
