Where and what is the cheapest new laptop I can get with a PCMCIA slot? Basically I need the computer only for web surfing, MS Word, and to use that slot (P2 cards offloading). Nothing more.
I found one a Microcenter for $450 plus $50 mail in rebate. Here it is.

you'll be hard-pressed to find a new laptop for less. there'll be deals like after thanksgiving and after xmas... but i doubt you want to wait that long.
that's a decent buy though, imho. i know quite a few people who've bought acer notebooks and have had no problems with 'em in two years.
i would just upgrade the memory. you can get 2gb of notebook memory from newegg for right around 100 bucks

Ya, i think this is a good deal. I'll prob get it , but I don't need really an extra memory or anything extra. This will be basically a P2 card (for hvx200)dumping station and double as a net surfer, nothing more. I'll probably pick it up soon. (sale ends May 13th)

thing is, with vista it's going to run like a dog with 512Mb of ram. i would at the very least look to filling up the other slot with another 512 stick.
i have a gb of ram in my notebook, and it still seems pretty slow running vista.

again, i'm looking for a laptop to use in the field for just one purpose, "dumping" or transfering footage from a card to an external harddrive. And use it to surf the net too. And that is all. (I have a desktop already)
So I got it, 14" Acer Laptop for P2 dumping/internet surfing at Microcenter. The sale is going on until Sunday. Cheap, light laptop for a great price. Ya i know it's old tech and stuff but I don't plan on doing anything but surf the net and dump the P2 cards into it onto external hd.
