I have a friends computer and it won't start up. I bought a new power supply becuase when I took it to my house and plugged it in to check to see if it had some voltages coming out, it start to smoke so I know that's junk. I bought a new one and hooked it up and it still don't turn on. I then proceeded to unhook my PS and hooked it up and still no go. I unplugged the ram and tried to turn it on and once again still no luck.
So now that that is out of the way, I am thinking it is either the motherboard is fried or the CPU. How do you know what it is? or what would you do to test/tell?
It is an emachine (I know, but it's actually not that bad) T2865, AMD athlon XP 2800, 512Ram, 160GB HD. The friend wants to know is it worth fixing or should he buy a new one. I told him anything can be fixed, but I need to figure out if it's worth it. This guy has some loot so I will get this if he gets another.
This is for his kid who is a fuck up who punches the thing and shit like that.
Summary
COmp doesn't power up, factored out that it's not the PS.
How do you test/tell if the Mobo is fried or the CPU.
Should I tell the friend to get a dell (so he has a warranty and support) Budget for new comp. $300/$400 or new/mobo/cpu
Thanks.

i dont think theres a way to test your cpu/mobo with out having extras...
it sounds to me that when the psu went, it took the cpu/mobo with it...
just have him build a new system...
also, its emachines... not many good things can be said about that company... sorry
Bro, no need to be sorry, I hear you on that. This brings me to my next question. I will have everything minus a mobo/cpu and PS. So can someone give me a link to a comparable system to build for him. I need to tell him if he should sink some cake into this or go with a $299-400 dell.
I know people just love sending links to newegg with the parts that are needed...lol.
Thanks in advance

well first off... before the links start flying around... what kind of computer does he want... what does he want to do with it?

Good question. This is going to be for his 15 year old son, so burning movies, music, email, surfing, etc. He is not a computer guru/knowledgeable user. Pretty much surfer/email thing. So something to replace the board/cpu that blew.

well ive been surfing around on newegg... and something hit me...
i think you might be better off with just a dell... reason being... if he bought a new mobo/cpu... youd have to make sure that mobo can run the video card that he has (agp, pci, pci-e) and you would also have to make sure you have the correct ram type for that board...
so unless he really wants to get into this... i would just suggest a dell
I am aiming towards that option. I told the father in law to let him know that it is going to be about $200 to fix. I figure $40 for a PS and around $160 for the mobo/cpu, ff he wants the same speed that is. If he wants slower, then it will be cheaper.
I am going to look on dell now.
Thanks.

ok there should be a reset button on the top right of the computer that has a - symbol & squarl symbol, press set then set it back to where it was, that resets the system. That button is the very very top botton in the back of the PC. After you do that, unplug all the IDE cables & then replug them then see if that works because thats what i did & it worked, but after all that, make sure you have the PC formatted.
