computer exits program in middle of game?

what does it mean when my computer suddenly exits a program i'm using? for example...i'm playing battlefield 1942 and i'm loading a map..then all of a sudden my computer goes to the desktop and i check my start menu taskbar and there aren't any programs running? why da hell does it do this? it's freaking annoying and can i fix it? my computer is very capable of handling the game also

it's your video card i had an obsolete video card but met sys requirements for game but it was obsolete and the problem occurred exited to desktop. and you would know when it is about to happen because the game stops working and stays frozen and then disappears to desktop.
i got a new graphics card because video drivers and flashing the video cards bios did not resolve the intermittent, tolerable every so often problem. since replacing the card works great. before i replaced that card i made sure it was hw issue it had nothing to do with any other hw or sw in the computer. the card even did it on another system.
i think it was just because the card was obsolete, it did meet the specs of what i was doing at the time though
