I just want to get a general idea of what field in IT do you guys/gurlz have. Even if you are not an IT Professional, I would still like to know what experience or education you have related to computers. Since we are all here to learn from one another this could help close the gap between who is proficient and who is a guru in certain IT fields. For example I have over 5 years job related hands on experience in Help Desk, PC support, Network Administration, and now recently Network Security. 10 years overall dabbling with computers. My background education I have a degree in MIS and Project Management, my current certifications are MCP, MCSA, MCSE, A+, Network+, and CCNA. But, I don't know much about web design, programming, or MACs.
Maybe this could help in seeing who are good reliable sources for certain questions, cause if you ask me about setting up a good network infrastructure, I'm all information, but if you ask me to help you with your website, I'm gonna look at your question with a big question mark on my head.
I'm completly self trained. I've been into computers since the age of 8 or so. My friends from grade school and high school all went into IT jobs to give you an idea of the clik I fell into. Been doing HTML since it was the 'cool new thing'. I've worked a few jobs doing networking and web site management at the University here because few people were as good at it as me. I have to deal with mac's in the biology dept. I pretty much take care of any computer problems in the dept. I can probably tell you something about everything. More proficient on the AMD side of things.

I'm a bit of both. I've been dabbling with pc's since the early 90's...built my own 486 dx2 50 comp back in the day :sigh...the memories: I had a job doing network administration/pc hardware/software upgrade and systems build/repair for about 3 years. I had to leave that job due to attending college...though I had to drop out of school recently due to financial difficulties. So I hope to have my cs degree in about another year or 2 if all goes well.
A lot of what I've learned is just through intuition, trial and error, and just extensive reading during my spare time. I hope to someday be able to open up my own consulting business or pc store...that would be splendid.

Do you remember the days when the 386 was the sh*t, and those days when a 286/12 2MB of RAM could play almost any game back then halfway decent?

That's cool, if I ever get any spare time I would like to at least dabble in HTML or web design. I might need some tips if you have the knowledge and time to spare.

ahaha agreed....those were the days.... Pea Shooting Pete, (as also mentioned) Doom and Simcity. Awesome. Back when AMD was nothing and Cyrix had the 'cutting edge technology' on lock.
We had an Apple II GS before that...wow talk about old school...I remember the OS's for those things lol was simply a big blue screen with 2 or 3 menu items...everything loaded off floppy. Winter Games 0wned all!!
When I was a kid my first computer was a VIC 20, when I got a commandor 64 I thought it was the greatest thing in the world. Haha the VIC 20 didn't have a hard drive and used a cassete tape drive as it's storage device. All I have to say is we have come a loooong way in the past 15 years.
anyone ever have the Apple IIe? that was my first comp.. green screen and clunky keyboard..
then we got our first pc.. 386dx. i thought the mouse was the coolest thing haha.
the best way to learn is just tinkering with comps yourself. i'm working in the pc support department.. it's pretty much troubleshooting everyday. all the education im getting right now as a comp sci major isn't helping that part of the field. i'm learning everything else but hardware/software troubleshooting.
website design for me is just a hobby.. i really dont like doing it for other people.. most people are so picky and want me to change everything.
I have been working with computers since 1996/1997, I am mostly self taught but I have recieved training at the Board of education as a hardware and software tech, I am also a PC tech at Best Buy, As far as education goes I have a Master of Fine Art and a Bachelor of fine are both with a concentration in computer art.

Got my first computer in 1985, I don't even what it looks like.. it was a big thing back then in Hong Kong... Programmed a tic tac toe program with my dad with that computer. Moved to Canada in 1987 and my first REAL computer was a 386/16 mhz, 40 MB Hard drive with 640k of RAM.. I remember getting the sucker upgraded with an additional 384k of RAM and it costed us something like 400 bucks.
Ever since then I've been into computers.. I got a new computer in 1991, (486 DX2 66, 400 mb hd, 8mb of RAM, 2400 baud modem). Started my own Net-based BBS (FidoNet, EdjNet, DigiNet, TecNet), first usage of email in 1992.. (Back in the FidoNet days and Frontdoor access).. Started my own computer consulting business with 3 friends in 1995, got too busy because we graduated from high school in 97 so all 4 of us took the profits, folded the company and went our own ways.
Currently majoring in Finance, with intention to get my CCIE and LPI certification.. Hopefully working with Financial Institutions in Internet Securities, or work for the SEC.
Have experience in all areas of computers except for graphics (I'm newb at PS).
