This happens to me the odd time when playing a game. I have yet to find a solution, but it can be a pain in the ass....

Get a mac...
No I'm just messing with ya. I would try downloading up to date drivers or if that doesn't help you boot in safe mode and if it doesn't happen then it could be your sound card, or ethernet/modem, etc...

i found out that looking for the problem could take days.. checking every single component on the computer. you would save a lot of time by just fresh formatting the computer with windows again and installing all the drivers you need. unless you actually want to find out what the prob is, just keep troubleshooting

or you could have bad powersupply
Yeah I would try to open the case to let air flow and see if it still does it. Thats a possibilty or it could be incompatible hardware or just that windows is corrupted. I had the same problem with my old comp and I tried everything and it still wouldn't work right until one day it just wouldn't turn on. So I tried rebuilding it and I just got frustrated. Then I got a mac...and I don't have to do that shit anymore.

saying 'get a mac' is just about laughable with my experience. They're twice as expensive for less power. And when they develop problems they go down HARD. I have to deal with a lab full of them in the biology lab I teach. Nothing but troubles. One came with currupt memory, one has developed screen problems, another one turns on and off when it feels like it. I could have built complete systems that would have put them to shame for less money and I know they'd be rock stable.
Back to the point of this thread, however...... You mention that you just built your system, what power supply are you using? Also what sound card? I've had to constantly fight with my creative soundblaster (notorius for countless conflicts)....just switched to a santa cruz and everything is pure butter.

Yeah I haven't had any problems with my mac...you must be using older macs that are about ready to go to pasture anyways. OS X is sweet and its rock solid...sorry to be off topic

Thats interesting that they are running OS X cause I haven't had any problems with it. Its the best OS I've used, though win NT was pretty darn good.

check out your power supply that could be a problem also. my comp did the same thing and i took it back to the store i bought my parts from and the guy said it could be the power supply. and yep it was. fixed my friend's comp by changing the power supply also. he also had the same problem of comp just shutting down.
only if people actually knew how to maintain their pc's.. they wouldn't run into these problems. installing and uninstalling uncessary software, putting files everywhere..
Yep, just like others have said, make sure you have the latest drivers for all your devices.
What Operating System are you running? If you're using XP, try typing in ' dxdiag' at the Run prompt and checking to see if your video and sound card drivers are certified and if there are no problems.
Is there a particular application or instance in which the problem always happens? That might also help to know with diagnosing it. You could also try logging on with Admin priveledges and checking the 'services' tool in the admin tools section and seeing if any device driver failed to initialize.
