Hey so I was wondering if anyone could tell me the best way to connect my stereo to my computer. I just recently built a new computer and have an ASUS P5-b deluxe motherboard. Will I need to get a sound card in order to do this?? If I just use a stereo mini jack to RCA will that do the trick? I've been wanting to put all of my music onto my new build but only if I can hook up my stereo to it.
Also will I have to disconnect the stereo from the computer when I don't want to use the stereo to play music? Or can I just switch it over to play through the stereo without disconnecting them when I want to? I've never done this before so I'm sure I sound pretty ignorant. Any help?
just get a rca to mini adapter or cable from radio shack, plug your stereo into your input port or your mic port on your soundcard, youll need software to actually record the music from your stereo to the computer as well, otherwise all you will get is a live feed, wasnt quite sure what you wanted if you need any more help lemme know

im currently running this setup and there really isnt any thing special you need to do. just run a 3.5mm jack to RCA into the receiver and youre done. its setup as the dedicated computer speaker. the way i figured it, dollar for dollar building your own sound system will sound way better than any computer speaker setup and cheaper too. the only down side was making room for the receiver on the desk.
everyone in here has a diffrent opinion and a diffrent task at hand i believe he was asking how to run audio INTO the comp and save it not how to stream it out through a stereo or anything to do with a tv tuner from what i gathered he wants to take the stereo and put the audio from it INTO the computer which is why i said use a mini jack to RCA to the soundcards input port, that will stream the audio from the stereo to the comp, but he will need some software to save the streams, but i dont know its like everyone in here read a diffrent question

either RCA to 1/8" stereo or just pull it out through the headphones using either a 1/4" to 1/8" or 1/8" to 1/8" male/male jack
as far as software goes, download audacity, its free from their site and lets you save audio input to the computer, and even any audio your computer is outputting (streaming audio)
Sorry guys, ive been busy. Thanks for the replies.
But yeah, all I want to do is play music from my computer through my stereo I have set up. So I guess all I need to do is get the 3.5mm jack to RCA cord. Is there a way to do this wirelessly? Or would that require a newer receiver? My receiver is older. Not to old but I don't know if it could do it wirelessly. Its a Harmon/Kardon.
theres companies that sell something for wireless i think, but if its a desktop, or even a laptop with a dock, i think it would be easier and definitely cheaper to just use the cable
