When i try to defrag my comp it says that i can't like a message comes up and says that it cant do it i think it say something about a program but i have all the programs down like aim and messenger..anybody have any ideas?
maybe u have another program running...it interferes with it...so it starts over...u have to have all programs closed. ctrl alt delete and close everything but explorer....i dotn like windows defrag norton utilities defrag is much faster to me
did you turn off your screensaver, if not that is why. Go into desktop settings and turn of your screen saver, then go into the power save section and turn off everything in there for the defrag (i.e hibernate, shut of disks, etc.)
gosh...if something is running then it is going to interfere with ur defrag...windows defrag takes a long long time...use norton utilities and their speed disk...tkaes me 30 minutes verses 3 hrs. i think i can do it in dos...yea u can...just like doing scandisk in msdos u can do the same i think the thing is "defrag" not sure though...this is so nothing is running at all. just close everything but explorer and ur fine...
Go to Windows directory and search file system.ini. In the [boot] section, add line ''shell=defrag.exe'' (without quotations) then exit and reboot. When you load Windows next, the Disk Defragmenter should be the only program to load. Run it, then 'CTRL-ALT-DEL' to reboot upon defrag completion. Before Windows stars its boot process, hold onto the F8 key and select the ''Command Prompt Only'' option. Go to your Windows directory, type ''edit system.ini'' and reverse your original change. Save, exit, then 'CTRL-ALT-DEL' to reboot and get on with your life.

i was talking with a tech the other day and he HIGHLY recommends doing a defrag through DOS....he says you have to make a boot disk to do it....forgot what he said though-there is a command to do it(wrote it down at home).....but he says the windows scandisk/defrag messes with your hard drive...
