I was gonna get a Dell notebook for my sister but Ive been hearing from coworkers that they suck and break down. Is this true? My sister plans to keep this computer for a long time.

i bought two inspiron 8600 laptop and loved them. and i'm planning on buying a 3rd laptop from dell. the quality seems decent to me and for the price it's really good. I paid $850 for each. i dunno how all these people who say it sucks treat their laptops but i wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.
my first laptop, the video card(nvidia go fx5200 or some crap) burnt out. it was my fault really as i was messing around with the laptop doing high intense stuff. i called in and dell had a box sent to me the next day. i sent the laptop back and within TWO DAYS it was back in my hands fixed.
If you want quality, go with IBM. they're top notch but is very pricey. Toshiba is good too but pricey as well.
I'm a college student so i go by prices more. $850 vs $1700 with comparable specs.
you can probably get the same price if you wait. Dell usually have big sales near the end of their quarter. The last one was in july, so i'm assuming the next is near the end of october.

i think dell makes a good laptop. i've been working on a Latitude D600 everyday at work for well over a year now. it is by no means " top of the line" but it makes a fine desktop replacement. it's survived a couple dozen business trips, 1 drop and even being stored in the hatch with the subs for the daily commute. never had a problem. and neither have any of the other 25 people in my building who are using the exact same setup.....

Yes because dell can make a laptop half the price of any other company using components of equal quality right? Dells are cheap for a reason, and the reason is low grade components. Youve just been lucky, and i cant belieev 25 other dell laptops lasted a year and not one of them had an issue, its impossible

you're right it's impossible. i must confess there was 1 problem. last month one of the guys battery pack wouldn't hold a charge anymore. dell replaced it free, even out of warranty. i guess they really do suck
I had a D600 for 2 years no problem, inspiron 700m for a few months. no problem either, dell laptops are ok and you cannot beat warranty and coupons, what other company can give you 3 years warranty? And I used to be an admin for a large company, and the only laptops that needed constant babying was the Sony Vaios. Dell was rock solid, and IBM was untouchable...
stay away from their small form factor desktop pcs though. they blow up due to heat!!!!
I have an Inspiron 600m that runs 24/7. It works good execpt for some minor quarks. They do use low grade components (just like Gateway & many other OEMs). The problem is they they buy lemon batches. A company makes a batch, discovers some are defective, and sells the ones considered what they call 'good' off to OEMs like Dell. They donot use retail-grade parts. I know Intel must make a lot of bad batches. Keep in mind not every single part is tested from the manf & OEMs donot test every single system - they just assemble them and ship them off. There can be a very high defect ratio - it is all about luck.
