my computer is a 4500. it says i need to reinstall a disc. can't remember what it is but the question is: would i lose the data that i saved on the computer be gine if i reinstall the disc. tried to call dell but took forever. so any info in this.

whats wrong with your computer?...is it booting up and telling you this?...try booting in safe mode...you might be able to burn a cd of the things your want to keep on your hard drive...need more info to help you..
Also, do you have a split hard drive (2 different drive names c:\, d:\, etc....)? Because if you do even if you run a system restore disc it should only affect your main drive.
The only people i see using a second hard drive for storage are people with a decent amount of knowledge. Most people never even realize the crap is there. All Sony laptops come partitioned into two drives. The people get them for 3 years then its new laptop time (at my work). When i get them back the D: is always empty and the C: is about 90% full. Ive been moving my documents location to the D: on all new laptops because of this.
Put in your Windows XP CD and boot to it. Hit Enter to do an XP Installation, then hit ´R´ over the existing partition and it should do the repair. What that does is pretty much just erase your windows files and restore them, so none of your personal data is lost.
