I'm assuming the burner came with the computer?
do you have any disks that go with it? maybe you could try installing from one of those...

Try to Do a System Restore to a point before you noticed the problem. if you deleteing something messed it up then that may fix it. i'm not sure, but i'll as my comp geek friend tommorow.

I really don't want to do a system restore because then i'll lose my files that i've downloaded lately and also system restores never work for me

Normally you can choose froma handfull of dates. i always restore to right before my problems began. i used to be worried about losing everything bc i dl'd alot of stuff, but if i am remembering correctly my files were still there after i was done. strange.... push comes to shove, backup your stuff to DVD and then restore.

Yeah System restore works great for software issues.
Have you try unplugging your CD/DVD rom data & power cables?
Just unplug & reconnect them.. and see what happens.
Doesn't hurt.

Update:
Reformatted, still same problem, tried to clean the laser, won't read the disc, e-mailed the tech support for the place i got it at waiting for reply, did some research on the internet and seems like a common occurance with all types of dvd burners, still boggles my mind how the dvd part can work fine burning and reading but the cd part doesn't do a damn thing, the dvd player works fine and reads cd's which is | |
