DVD burner lens about to die out?

I have made 15 coasters already trying to back up my movies. Different movies at that. I use Ridata 8X-R discs w/ my NEC 3520A writer. It seems that the lens for a second turns off towards the end of writing a dvd. Say around 85-90% portion of the dvd. Then it just starts writing again.

Any ideas as to why this is happening? I don't have any programs running in the background either. It reads/rips perfectly but causes errors towards the end when burning.

this sux

thx for the help

try burning at a slower speed. or it might be time to invest in a new burner

same results occur from 2X - 8X.

Also I have always used Ridata and they never fail.

Thing is that the burner isn't that old. It is less that 8 months old.

Lightbulb

Hopefully you have a 12 month warranty to get a refurbished replacement, if it is only 8 months old

Take a can of air (one with a straw thingy) and open the drawer.

shoot some air in there a couple times. It may be lint that was carried in witht he cd or dvd and it stuck there. If you feel adventerous take your drive out open it up clean it and see if there is an adjustment gear and go one notch one way or another. (This will be similar to the PS2 laser error fix)

Does it read CDs and DVDs fine? or is it just the burning that it messes up on?

It reads everything fine except when it comes to backing up my dvds. It always messes up on the same damn spot.

Thats a good idea i might try that this weekend. I do have experience cleaning ps2 lens so it shouldn't be a problem.

Thx again all

That sucks, I have always wondered how long it takes for a DVD writer to wear out.

Oh well time to upgrade the better stuff.

Did you try different burning software? If its an image, DVD Decrypter wil burn it fine and is free.

EDIT: Get a rewritable disk to do testing to make sure it isnt a software conflict.

You can blow it out, it actually does help sometimes - but if it's under warranty I wouldn't open up the drive. Request a replacement, which will likely be used. What software are you using to burn?
